GREAT SERIES OF HIGH SCHOOL CONTESTS Oratorical and Athetic Event to be Held at University There will be held at the Uni versity of South Carolina in the next two months the greatest series of high school contests that has ever been held at any State University in the South. Beginning with the State high school basketball contest for boys, the latter part of March, there will follow the State cham pionship basketball game be tween high school girls early in April, then the preliminary de bates between the high school teams of the South Carolina high school debating league which will take place about the 20th of April and then the final de bates at the University of South Carolina on the 1st and 2nd of May. The tenth annual inter scholastic track meet, oratorical and expression contest will also be held at the University on the last mentioned dates. The closing event of high school contests will be the base ball game that will be played some time the latter part of May at the University between the two teams making the best show ing in the different high school contests over the State. The first of these annual con tests beginning in 1910 consist ed only of track events, but re cognizing the rapid development in baseball, basketball and foot ball the high school association at a meeting in December, 1916, decided to include these sports in the high school contests to be held at the University annually. The University, through its Athletic Advisory Board, as sumes responsibility for the en tire conduct of the final game between the two teams contend ing for State championship in any of these different branches of athletics. The contestants in the high school debating contest are al ready beginning to register for that event. The following high schools have notified the director of the extension department that they will be in the debate for the Manning cup this year: Gaffney, Bennettsville, Union, Winns boro,. Fort Mill, Kingstree, Lex ington, Newberry, Pickens, Spartanburg, Beaufort, Honea Path, Whitmire, Simpsonville, Dillon, Pendleton, Epworth Or phanage. Rock Hill, Estill, Co lumbia, Sumter and Prosperity. The querry for the debate this year is: "Resolved, That the Government of the United States should adopt a policy of requiring one year of military training of all ablebodied men before they reach the age of 21." STRAW RIDE AND DANCE FOR R. 0. T. C First of Series of Entertainmeat HId at Iopkins Major Chairsell, the com manding officer of the Univer. sity R. 0. T. C., arranged an outing for the students ir the military department in the form of a straw ride to Hopkins followed by a dance held in the Hopkins pavilion on the nigh1 of March 18. The five army trucks being used by the R. .0 T. C. were used in carrying the students and a number of young ladies from the city, whc went as guests of the R. 0 T. C. In addition to these visi tors, a number of local young ladies were present. Refresh. ments were served by th( ladies of Hopkins. A negro jazz band from the city furnishec music for the occasion. This is the first of a series o1 entertainments to be given .tc the R. 0. T. C. men within the near future. The Columbia Equal Suffrage League at its monthly meeting held last week, decided to offer a medal to the girl students of the University. The reward is to be given the co-ed who de livers the best address on Wo man Suffrage. It is understood that either the pro or con of this question can be selected. The value of the medal is $25. The final date for entering the debating league is March 25th. The preliminary debates will be held about the 20th of April, which date will give the schools plenty of time to get their teams in shape even though they do not start on the work of preparation until the 1st of April. The bul letin giving both negative and iffirmative sides of the question Lo be debated will be mailed to every high school in the State the latter part of this week. The bulletin on track and field ath letics for this year's contest will be sent at the same time. Any school in the State rated as a high school by the State high school inspector is eligible for membership in the debating league.
