RODDEY MEDAL DEBATE HELD IN CHAPEL Won by VanMeter. The annual Roddey medal de bate was won this year by J. 0. VanMeter of Columbia. The query of the debate was: "Re solved, That the U. S. govern ment should own and operate all its public utilities, meaning as such, railroad, telephone, tele graph and express lines." Mr. VanMeter is a member of the Euphradian Literary So ciety. He is physical director and director of the extension de partment at the University. His victory makes the third consecu tive victory for the Euphra dians. Second honor was won by E. B. Smith of the Clario sophic Society. The judges were Christie Benet, Robert Moorman, Irvine Belser, William H. Jones and Harry N. Edmunds. M. A. Wright, Euph., pre sided; H. Brockinton, Euph., acted as chief marshal. The program was: E. B. Smith, affirmative, Clariosophic; J. 0. VanMeter, negative, Euphradian; R. C. Thompson, affirmative, Euphra dian; J. R. Bryson, negative, Clariosophic. THE Y. M. C. A. Under the leadership of its live and efficient secretary, Mr. Hancock, the Y. M. C. A. is en thusiastically preparing for the work of the second term. There is much to be done at Carolina. The following officers have been elected for 1919: Presi dent, E. B. Smith; vice presi dent, J. S. Mears; secretary, Joe Norwood; treasurer, H. R. Smith. The cabinet and the student council have been re organized and all are pulling for a greater Y. M. C. A. at the Uni versity. Last week the Y. M. C. A. conducted a series of revival meetings on the campus under the leadership of Dr. Irwin, who has been in charge of religious work for the Canadian troops overseas. The first meeting was attended by the Columbia Col lege Glee Club, which sang sev eral appropriate selections. It is hoped that these meetings prove of permanent benefit to the students and the Y. M. C. A. Two Bible study classes have been organized and every fel low is urged to enroll in one. The class under Professor Den nison meets in the chapel, while the class under Professor Pat ton meets in the old law room. Classes for R. 0. T. C. men are conducted in Thornwell College. All classes meet on Friday night .iust after suppe UNIVERSITY RECEIVES TELESCOPE. Given by Mr. Hanhan. A fifteen inch telescope has been received by the University from J. W. Hanahan of Winns boro; a member of the House of Representatives. Mr. Hanahan gave the telescope to the Uni versity on the condition that the general assembly appropriate the money to mount it. The desired appropriation of $2,500 has been secured. It will be some time before the instrument will be accessible to the students as experts will have to be se cured to place it in the proper position. Maj. S. H. Crumbaugh, head of the department of ma thematics, who is an expert on astronomy, is delighted with the telescope and says it will mean that the University will have the best astronomical instrument in the State and one of the best in the South. The University is exceedingly grateful to Mr. Han ahan for this gift. STATE HIGH SCHOOL MEET COMES IN MAY (CONTINUED FROM PAGE ONE.) years shall have permanent pos session of the trophy. Both boys and girls are eligi ble for membership on the de bating teams. A large number of schools have already written Mr. J. 0. VanMeter, director of the Extension Department, of their intention to enter the meet. Beore March 25 he ex pects a great many others to enter. The girls' expression contest, which will be held at the same time as the other contests on the University campus is at tracting a great deal of interest. These contestants will be enter tained by the University * this year and not by the Women's Colleges of Columbia. The pre liminaries will be held in the Euphradian and Clariosophic Society Halls of the University, on the afternoon of Thursday, May 1, and the final contest in one of these auditoriums the same night. The State Interscholastic Track Meet will be held on Fri day, May 2. The preliminaries in the track meet will be held Friday morning on Davis field. The finals will be held Friday afternoon on the same field. The school winning the highest number of points in the track meet is awarded a trophy cup given by Sylvan Bros., of Co lumbia. The athlete winning the greatest number of points in the meet is awarded the Reach-Mc Master trophy cup on which his name will be inscribed. This is held for one year.
