SMITH RETURNS FROM WASHINGTON Conference Called by War In dustries Board. Dr. Reed Smith of the Eng lish department of the univer sity who has been giving most of his time during the past year to the State Council of Defense has just returned from a most Important conference at Wash ington. This conference was called by the War Industries Board to take steps to make more stringent the laws already in force regarding building and repair work in the United States, but the day the confer ence met the armistice was signed and instead of making the program for building more stringent the War Industries Board raised the limit of amount that can be spent for reconstruction and building of .new residences. Dr. Smith felt that the work of reconstruction in this coun try were so great and the prob lems so complex that it was quite likely that the govern ment would ask that the Coun cil of Defense continue to car ry on its work for some months after peace was declared in or der to facilitate the movement to get the country back to a peace basis. Think and Remain CONTINUED FROM PAGE TWO reflect that when these men re turn a large percentage of them are to get these jobs back. It is inevitable that the return of the men from overseas should create no little econom ic upheavel. Salaries will not continue to rise and in a large number of cases they will of necessity dwindle to a fraction of their war buble standard. To the man who continues his edu cation this drop will have only a minimum of interest and ef fect. Three or four years later he will graduate prepared for the bigger positions with the salaries again steady and posi tions open for the men with the knowledge. Frankly, there are some men who will not return ; there are some whom we will not ask te return. The university wants MEN not slackers. Classify yourself. The Dr. Jekyll of Berlin now has fears for the safety of his Hyde.
