S. C. HIGH MISS THOMAS WINS EXPRESSION MEDAL Winthrop. Training School Wins Girls' Expression Contest Miss Louise Thomas of Win throp Training school won first place in the first annual girls' expression contest held under the auspices of the South Caro lina Inter-High School Athletic and Oratorical association in the chapel of Chicora College for Women Thursday evening, April 25. Her selection was "The Christmas Spirit." Sec ond place was won by Miss Lil lie Mae Snyder of Greenville with "Portia and Nerissa." Miss Jane Belle Barnett of Greenwood won third place, her selection being "High Cul ture in Dixie." Honorable men tion went to Miss Bernice Clark of Clio, whose subject was "The Spanish Dancer." Twenty-two young ladies, representing as many high schools of South Carolina, en tered the erpression contest. A series of preliminaries was held Thursday afternoon in society halls of the college. Chicora College for Women co-operated. with the Univer sity of South Carolina and the South Carolina Inter-High School Athletic and Oratorical association in providing accom modation for the visiting young ladies. The university authori ties and officials of the associa tion expressed their thanks for the hospitality offered by the college. Winner of the first place will be given the medal offered by the James L. Tapp company of Columbia. Winner of second place receives the medal given by F. B. Shackelford company of Columbia. COLUMBIA HIGH BOYS BASKETBALL CHAMPS Capitol City Lads Win Easily From Hastoc Quint The game for the high school basketball championship of the State was won last Friday by the Columbia High team from the Hastoc High School of Spartanburg, by the score of 50 to 11. The game, played on theq university gym. court, was wit nessed by a large crowd of school children and others, and was one of the best high school games ever seen here. The losers put up a game fight from beginning to end. {CHOOLS CC WAGNER WINNER IN ORATORICAL CONTEST Union Representative Gets Bank of Columbia Cup Using "America's Mission" as his subject, Macbeth Wag ner of Union won the annual State high school declamation contest which was held under the auspices of the South Caro lina Inter-High School Athletic 'and Oratorical association in the chapel of the State univer sity Thursday evening, April 25. By his victory Mr. Wagner will receive the medal given by the Bank of Columbia. He is also awarded the Wiesepape trophy cup which he will re tain for one year, after which it will again be contested for. Second place and the R. L. Bryan company medal goes to Enoch Crowson of Winnsboro. The association medal for third place goes to DeVore Andrews of Greenwood. Charles Bar low of Dillon was awarded honorable mention. The eight speakers who reached the final contest were selected from a list of 33 boys representing as many high schools thru preliminary con tests held Thursday afternoon. The final contest for State onors, arrived at after a series ,f preliminaries, was held in he chapel of the State univer ity Saturday morning, April 7. The Union affirmative eam thru preliminary contests Lad established itself as the est affirmative team entered n the competition. Not to be outdone, the Union egative team, composed of 'ant Kelly and Allston Moore, uring its series of prelimin ries had won over all the op osition encountered and es ablished its position as the est negative team in the tate. The final debate was eld between these two Union ?ams and the affirmative was warded the decision. The iargin of victory was extreme ' close. Judges were Dr. Reed mith, Prof. J. Nelson Frierson nd Rev. A. W. Blackwood, D. . The question debated was ie literacy test. The three days of high school ontests at the University of outh Carolina will hereafter e marked in red on all Union alendars. Not only did its ,vo debating teams prove emselves the best in the State nd win for their school the cup iven by Governor Richard I. lanning, but on Thursday vening Macbeth Wagner, of ie same school and a member f the winning debating team, ,on the annual contest in eclamation. The debates which culmi ated in Union's success were eld under the auspices of the outh Carolina High School De ating league, which was or anized during this session by le extension department of ie State university.
