Carolina has 14 men in the C. battalion of engineers, L "Country" English and Serg Smith of "C" company; Lieu "Runt" Coggeshall of "A company, and in "B" compan of Columbia are Sergts. JamE Saye, S. Our stay at Hempstead, I I., was exceedingly pleasan Nowhere have I found peop1 so anxious to give the soldiei a good time. Then, too, N. " city furnished us all with sigh of greatest interest and Conc Island delighted us with its ui numbered amusements. It wi take no short time for the mer ories of Camp Mills to fac from our minds. But now we are in anotho country with the scenery a changed and where we hold u our fingers for numbers ar point at what we want. TI we continue to learn a litt French, it doesn't progress all to suit us. Work is our middle nan but so is eat and sleep. The too, we are all enjoying tf novelty of being in a new cou try with so many interestir sights all around us. I coul not say for certain, howeve that we are not really the ce: ter of interest at least to tU French people. Everywhere we find the pe< pie kind and anxious to mali our stay pleasant. Tho the snow fell almos daily during January and thi temperature was. below zer not one day did we miss work "' with the exception of Sunday, which was the day for cleaning e up and inspection. Doctor, did you ever hear of "Sunny France?" Well, there r is no such place. We are in s "Rainy France," where the mud is located. I know you have visited this country and I believe you will agree with me. We don't have mud ankle deep, nor knee deep, but hip deep. Sometimes we step out s of our boots, turn around and d pull them out. d To be sure, we haven't such r to contend with all the time. Back in the towns and villages n are to be found the best roads k in the world. Not a few, but all are of the same type. Ameri s. ca is ahead of the world in t. many things, but France has . her beat in the matter of high. t. ways. No doubt you would be in y terested in what we are doing. s Wherever the army has a job it wants done the officers turn it 3, over to us. We are doing just i, what you have always heard d engineers do. There is absolutely on n- need to worry. The wine we g are allowed to drink is not a d strong as grape juice, houses r, of ill-fame are not tolerated, ~- and while we sing a great deal Le the bullets do most of it. Before closing may I acid a )- few things the soldier really :e appreciates over here. First y and foremost, a letter, tobacco -n (tho I don't use it), socks, gum I- and if you please a puffer full -of "black flag."
