CAROLINA LAWYERS TO HEAR ADDRESSES Judge Woods Begins Lec tures Before Law School Prof. John P. Thomas, Jr., dean of the law school has an nounced that Judge C. A. Woods, is here to begin his lec tures to the law school. Prof. Thomas announced some time ago that Judge Woods had ac cepted his invitation to deliver a series of lectures to the pros pective lawyers. Judge Woods was formerly associate justice of the supreme court of South Carolina, and after serving many years in that capacity he was selected by President Wilson to serve as Judge of the circuit court of appeals for the circuit embrac ing the South Atlantic States. The federal judge will dis cuss subjects of interest and value to the embryo lawyers of the university. In a notable series of lectures during the ci last session he treated of the C origin and development of the common -law and of the juris diction of State and federal courts, with a special lecture 3 on legal ethics. His lectures of last session extended over a period of a week and it is ex pected that his lectures this year will cover that length of time at least. Judge Woods practiced law in Marion for many years, where he made an enviable reputation for himself before being elected to the bench in South Carolina. He will deliver his first lec ture before the law school at nine o'clock Wednesday morn ing. S. M. Sifford has gone home to undergo an operation for tonsilitis. M. F. Winter is gradually recovering from an operation for mastoiditis. Dr. Smith was born in Abbe ville and received his first col lege training at Wofford, at which institution he taught for some years. The alumni of Wofford and South Carolinians generally will welcome the op portunity of hearing the distin guished Wisconsin educator. After receiving his A. B. de gree from Wofford, Dr. Smith studied at Harvard, Berlin and Leipzig, receiving his Ph.D. de gree from the University of Leipsiz. He was given the LL. D. by Wofford and the Univer sity of Arkansas. After having taught at Wofford Dr. Smith spent some years as a member of the faculty of Vanderbilt university and Williams col lege, going to the University of Wisconsin in 1894 and serving continuously since that year. In 1903 Dr. Smith was pres ident of the American Philo logical association. He has written a volume of reminis cences and sketches and has edited many of the Greek clas sics.
