CITADEL WINNER OF TRIANGULAR DEBATE Undergraduate Contest Goes to Teams From Mili tary School Citadel won the first under graduate debate held Saturday, April 28, between the three state I colleges when she defeated Clem son's affirmative team at Clemson and Carolina's negative at the Citadel. In a doubtful contest held in the Columbia College auditorium Saturday evening, Clemson's rep resentatives. J. S. Watkins and W. M. Blackwell defending the negative of the query "Resolved, That the United States should adopt a system of universal com pulsory military service" won the decision by a vote of 3 to 2 over Carolina's representatives, J. In his address~ Mr. ?o'wler sug gested a p)lan whereby he thoungh t all universities and large mann tacturinig plants could co-operate with each other. He showed how the universities might han dIe the problems of all, waste produe-ts which the planIts dio not seem to have time to work with. Mr. F'owler, in explaining the methods of' the Bethlehem plant,. began with the raw material and explained the entire process that powder go through in mnaking. VARSITY STUDENTS WILL BE EXAMINED All Applications Must Be Sent to Capt. Graham at Columbia Capt. J. M. Graham, U. S. A., inspector-instructor of the South Carolina National Guard, has been designated as examiner at Columbia of all men wishing to attend the training camp to be held at Fort Oglethrope. Up to twelve o'clock yesterday 43 stu dents and five of the University professors had sent in applica tions for the camp. Gen. Henry Thompson, profes sor of military science at the University wired a list of names to the Eastern department last week. He was notified that the men should report for -xamina tion to Capt. Jones, Clemson College. Gen. Thompson, realiz ing the inadvisability of such a step, asked permission to have Lieut. (ary. U. S. A., come to Columbia. Since that. time Capt. Graham has been placed in charge with temporary headquarters in the State armory. Final selections will be made on May 8, but no applicants will be examined after May 4. All the men are membersof the tini ver..ity training corps and have been taking intensive military (rill for over three weeks.
