WESTMINS [ER WINS HIGH SCHOOL MEET The best all around athlete was Thomas of Liberty, scoring 16 points, breaking all high school records for the 100 yard dash, and securing for a year the Mc Master-Reach trophy cup. Car ter and Sullivan, Westminster's whole team in finals came next with 13 and 11 points, respective ly. Events and winners follow: 100 yard dash- 10.2 seconds by Thomas of Liberty: I). Mann of.Six Mile. Running high jump-- Five feet five inches by Carter of West minster: ). Mann of Six Mile. 880 yard run -1'wo minutes 14.2 secends by Rives of Green ville; Herndon of York. Rives' c record has not been surpassed by more than two-tenths of a second v at any previours meet. Discus throw -144 t'eet S inche by Phillips of Chester; Allgood of Pickens. 220 yard dash--23.8 seconds (within eight-tenths of a second of the highest State scholastic record) by Thomas of Liberty: S llivan of Westminster. Pole vault 10 feet 5 inches tied by Carter of Westminster and O'Dell of Pickens with pre vious highest record. 120 yard 1ow hurdle-16.2 see onds by Thomas of Liberty, Sul livan of Westminster. Running broad .jump 19 feet 6 inches by Crane of Liberty: Carter of Westminster. 440 yard dash --57.2 seconds by Sullivan of Westminster; Yon gue of Pickens. Shot put -A new record of 42 feet 1 inch established by O'Dell of Pickens; and exceeding the S-) th Carolina interscholastic re cord of 39 feet 5.5 inches; Evans of Six Mile. Mile run -- 5 minutes 17.6 see onds by Parkins of Greenville; Herndon of York. At both the preliminary and final contests John C. Blackburn, physical director, served as ref eree, J. O. Van Meter as -tarter, and Solomon Blatt and J. M. Ha good as official announcer and clerk of course, respectively. At a delightfully informal re ception given at Flinn Hall im mediately after the conclusion of the finals in honor of the contes thnts, principles and superinten dlents and their friends, W. S. Currell, presidenr of the UJniver sit,y, announced the winners of the several events, awarding gold medals to winners of first1 places, bronze medals to winner of secondl place, and red1 ribbons with the stamp of the association to winners of third place in each event. Ruskin Describes Life in Polar Regions "The Eskimos never take 1 bath." said J. W. Ituskin. noted lecturer explorer in his address be fore the student body at chapel Wednesday. "No they never take a bath from the day of their birth until they die, the average life of the Eskimos be irng about 28 years." The lee turer con fessed that d uring the one and a half years he spent in the artic regions he never hathed. In the polar regions there is no such thing as disease. everybody is blessed with a super healthy appetite, the average Eskimo eating four meals a day and con suming from four to s!x pounds of meat each meal. The Eskimos, said MrI. Rusk in have no laws, not even a writte Ii language. But the Ilmost curious and most interesting fact. about them is their mode of kiss ing. They never kiss in the mouth, for the mist would quickly freeze, all they do is rub noses.
