Thompson to Con duct Training in Lieu of Army Officer At the largest student body meeting of the year held Wed nesday, 173 Carolina students volunteered for the reserve of GEN. THOMPSON ficers training course soon to be inaugurated at the University under General Henry T. Thomp so . Since then the number of enlisted men has increased to 190 and it is confidently ex pected to total 200 before organi zation is completed. General Thompson was chosen to conduct the training course by the executive committee of the board of trustees. He immedi ately accepted the invitation, and will give his services to the Uni versity without remuneration as his patriotic duty. The four companies which were organized Tuesday will drill from 7 to 7:45 A. M. every clay except Saturday. A few of the faculty have organized a squad and will drill the same number of hours. The co-eds have arranged for Gen. Thompson to drill their Red Cross Unit. Yesterday Carolina heard for the first time since 1876 the note of a bugle. Reveille will be sounded every morning at6:30 and drill call at 6:50. Twenty squad marchers, or temporary drill srgeants, have been ap p)oinlted to assist Gen. 'Teitnes see and South 'arolina. The affimative debate was held in the Euphradian Hall where J. D. Brandenburg, Clariosophic, and L. 1. Harrison, Euphradian, were chosen . with John I. Rice alternate over a field of eight contestants. Charles L. Smith of the senior law class presided over this contest. On April 21 the affirmative team debates the University of 'ennessee at Gains ville, Florida. At the negative preliminary held in the University chgl-el J. C. Kearse, Clariosophic, and ). S. Polier, Euphradian, were nam ed to uphold the negative aigainst the University at Knoxville, Ten nessee. C. R. Spenser was chos en alternate, E. P. Hlodges of the Euphrac'i m Society acting as presiding oficer. 'I he events promise to be unusually interest ing, and the whole campus is awaiting with expectation the beginning of fest ivities. The gaities of the week will commence with the crowning of the queen, Miss Marie Salley, on Monday evening at a reception to be held in the University gymnasium, to which the girls of the local colleges are mnvited. El lie GAMECOCKS COP H CONTEST FN 1917 SEASON OPENS WITH REAL BASEBALL Tie Opener With Newberry, Drop Second to Wofford by 2 to 0 Score. Carolina's baseball season opened Friday with a 7 to 7 tie with Newberry, the game being called in the tenth. The stars for Carolina were Captain Hor ton and R. Waring. The game was a see-saw from beginning to end and it was a toss up until the last inning had been p.ayed. NE w1. erry start e( things with a lead of one run in the opening inning. The Gamecocks, however, ran up three in the third and two more in the sixth. The Indians came back strong with five runs in the sixth. Carolina tied the score in the eighth and forged ahead in the ninth only to have Newberry tie the score in her half. C. Waring put up a fine exhi bition in the box. fanning eight and allowing only one free tick et to first. The pitcher's battle Saturday ended in Carolina losing her sec ond game by a 2 to 0 score.
