SINGLE TAX SUBJECT OF CHAPEL ADDRESS Dr. J. G. White Speaks on the High Cost of Living l-r. John G. White, Chicago, an expert on political economy, gave a most illuminative talk on the "Single Tax" in chapel last Tuesday. 1)r. White. who spoke here last year on a kindred topic set forth some convincing facts a, to the causes of the present high cost of living, lie showed that a ftndamental cause was our mis-use of the power of taxation, and outlined a plan, the sin-le tax, which he believes wiould cor rEot the evil to a great degree. "'T'e land owner has always taken toll of all profit,'' says l)r. White. "To make his land more valiable he holds part of it. thus creatinig an artificially high value ftor the remainder. this effects indirectly everybody. If a man must pay high for land, he is go iig to rent or re-sell it high. So the high cost of living is boosted. "(Our' present system of' taxa tion fosters this practice of hold ing land by taxing used land as much and more than idle land.'' he continued. "The single tax Iflanl pro)poses to change this by r'emloving taxes ol ulsed property and making it impossible by high taxation to hold needed ground. Thus land that can (to goo( for all, will be brought to a reason able vale."
