Euphradian Society. When the Philomathic Society, which was the fErst society form ed at the new founded South Car olina College and existed for one year, was reorganized into two societies in February, 1806, and the two brothers, James and Jos eph Lowry, were chosen to make the division of the students, Joseph Lowry pick-d the mem bers of the society that was to be called the Euphradian. As the early minutes of the society are lost, nothing is known about the selection of the name. William Harper, the first ma triculate of the college was the first president of the Euphradian Society. Under the first consti tution the officers were presi dent, vice-president, secretary, treasurer, recorder, and four; critics. The badge of the society was a six-pointed star of gold with the year 1806, the Greek letters "Phi Alpha Epsilon, "and the motto, "Amicitiae Sacrum.'" The mystic stand was adopted in 1815. Like its sister society, the Clar iosophic, the Euphradian paid the expenses of a certain number of beneficiary student-. The two socie.ties met at differ ent hours in the hapel until 1820. In this year the Euphradians moved into a hall of their own on the upper floor of the center building of DeSaussure. Twenty eight years later they moved a gain, this time into the hall that they still occupy. There was a formal opening December 7, 1848, at which Dr. James H. Thornwell made the address. "The hall was then," remarked Judge HUd son of his first entrance into the society, "newly furnished and equipped and presented a beauti ful, brilliant, imposing appear ance. The impression upon a boy from the back country upon, beholding the gaudy and dazzling spectacle was simply over whelm ilg. Judge Hudson also said that' for decorum, dignity, and order ly transaction of business the Euphradian Society was not sur-: passed by the Senate or House of Representatives of South Caro lina. This society was nearly as, large as the House of Represent-' atives. To quote further from this dis tinguished Euphradian, "For many years it is said that there was great rivalry between the two societies in securing recuits .from the newly matriculated stu dents, but as time rolled on it came to pass that the society a studen~t joined upon his entering college was determined by the district (county) from which he came, for the districts (counties) of the state became divided near-' ly equally between Euphradian and Clariosophie.
