C., January 9, 1917 OUR TRIBUTE This issue of THE' GAME CoCK is respectfully dedi cated to the memorv of Robert Elliott Gonzales, its foinder and first editor. His recent untimely death has broulght sorrow to the hearts of all who knew him, but nowhere is he more sincoerely mourned than up Onl oUr campus. Here he is still remembered as "Bob' Gonza'es. the gentle, kind ly college man. We leave to the world the praise of his genius; we can only say, ''Our friend is dead." We could tell of his vork for the publications, for the athletic teams, but ve choose to recall him as one who was true to ou1 n1obleslt andl best traditions, who left uts all better for his having been among u I his paper' is a mnemorial to his unIsellish efforIt s for thle IulbuIildinIig of' the st udent body,. and whatever merit it may attain is in a large measur du (te to the inlspir,a tion of it.s first editor'. To what others have saidl we wish to add this, our1 simnle word of trihote. A CREED What things are there that make the world worth while? A cheery word, a smile. A song to quicken some discour aged soul; A hand to lift and guide him to ward the goal, Another mile. The understanding that a brother might Fall stricken in the fight, While we untempted hold our heedless way; Ah! that one word, that hand, could turn to day His gathering eight! What certitude have we save hopes profess? What beacons disposses With steadier gleams Fa:th's rushlight in the gloom? Oh, friends, in this blind clay there is no room For bitterness! Just kindness goes much farther than a goad. The idlest seeds you sowed Will glad your passiug with their grateful flowers, When you behold, freed from I)eath's iron hours, The traveled road! - R. E. Gonzales. THE POET'S PASSION Thou drearnest of mistic lowlands Where silver rivers run Of (tusks golden glowlands West of the sitting sun. Thou hadst full oft in silence Glimpse of a lovely shore Vissions of green, palm islands Where dwelt thy lost Lenore. And sleep embosomed valleys. Where sleep all magic things In an enchanted palace Reigned o'er by fairy kings. But when thy vission darkened, A nd thy restless heart grew chill, \Vhat heart but would have hark To whispered hints of ill? Vlad and beyond all fearing, l'orlorn. unloved, alone; 'Thy tuItoredl bra'fin despairing )f e'en Go oni thy throne. Thy tutored brain dlespairing Of ('en God on thy throne. Thou dhid'st as thy soul said ''(o it'' Nor morre high angels can Thou wert not less a poet, Hecause thou wert a man. R RF Goales.
