Saidl Tiny 'Tim BASKETB3ALL With the ushering in of cold D)eember' we are forced to giv'e up loot Hall and seek amus.. ment in a warmer atmosphere. We turn our attention to the natural successor of the popular pig skin game, Basket Ball, which is probably the greatest indoor sport of American col !egcs. Practice has begun here and with several of the old men back prospects are bright for a win ning team. There is one thing lacking-there are not enough men out. From a Atudent body the size of ours we should have out at least twice as many% as have reported so far. If you know the game it is your duty to Carolina to come out if you have never played it is your duty to learn how. Do your duty! a - HIGH SCHOOL ATHLETICS. High schoolathletics have pass ed their infancy. They have gradually grown and developed until they are fast becoming of state wide interest instead of merely a local matter. They have reached the point where championship games must be played and winners decided on neutral territory. This is good and should be encouraged. Some system should be establish ed to regulate the playing of these championship games. Each year a high school track meet is held at the University. Track is proabaly the least bene. ficial and certainly the least in teresting of athiotics indulged in by the schools of South Caro lina. If' the track meets liave been a success, anld they u ndouht edly have. wIhy not extend this system to include football and baseball? '1here seems to be no valid reaonI why this should not be doie.* Aln association sIoUll be or ganized similar to those existilg het ween colleges for the regula tion of inter-scholastic athletic contests. Tlhis organization would agree on rules to govern these events and have them en forcel. It would be their duty to see that efficient oficials were employed and that only the cleanest methods indulged in. Finally, it would declare thc champions by one, or a series of po.s-season games, to be played on neutral territory. The University has always taken a vital nterest in high school a ffairs and is anxious tc dlo its part to prlomlote some such plan. As for the place .to play these championshig games th( Ujniversi ty is an ideal one. are located in the center of the state with an excellent atletic field coupled with numnerous other ad vantages.
