C., October 17, 1916 THE LITERARY SOCIETIES We note with great pleasure that quite a number of the new men have joined one of the liter ary societies. Evidently these know a good thing when they hear about it. They have seen fit to avoid the fatal mistake that so many have made before by neglecting this important phase of college life. There are a great many who have not joined, as yet. To these men we must speak a word of persuasion. Unquestionably the training you get inside the society walls has the greatest formative influence of all other activities on the campus. Ask the man who belongs to one. Beginning with this issue THE GAMECOCK will publish the week ly program of each of the socie ties, hoping thereby to create a new interest in literary society work. SPEAKING ACQUAINTANCE Colleges are more and more tending toward democracy. The time was when clans and classes stuck together, so to speak, at the exclusion of all others. But with the abolishment of frater nities at this and many other in stitutions there has developed, or is developing, a standard of universal speaking acquatintance. Of course, as long as human sosiety exists there will be dif ferent strata of social classes. The gregarious instinct of man leads him to association with congenial companions. It is per fectly natural, therefore, for the literary man to search out the literary group with which to fraternize, the athlete the ath letic group, etc. We have noticed this year, with no small degree of anxiety, a very sad state of affairs. The attitude of some students toward others seems almost to have reached the freezing point. We have seen, repeatedly, students pass one another and never give any sign of even a distant ac quaintance. Now, this may seem to be a very small matter but it is not by any means. The only way we may hope to attain the very best that we may ac complish is through a realization of common interest and through concerted action through com plete unity. This we believe to be impossible except through the medium of universal acquain tance. We are somewhat gratified to note though that this delin quence is confined largely, but not entirely, to the freshmen. To the new men we would urge a realization that to speak to any man don't hurt you, but every one will like you better. The old man will take note. We hestiate to attempt to advise them. AN EXCUSE AND GOOD-BYE Next week, as some have pro-, bably heard, is Fair week. As we are in such deep sympathy with so worthy a cause, we will take a week off and next week THE GAMECOCK will not fly. Realizing the consternation and bereavement that this announce ment would undoubtedly have on our readers, we purposely delayed the publication this week in order that they would not be deprived for so long a consecu tive period, of the enlivening presence of the "bird." Unless some unforeseen cir cumstances arise to hinder our release, the present staff of this publication will lay down their pens to rest and to let our sub scribers rest. The new staff will be better. We know this because they can't be worse. But we don't have to discuss this for they admit it themselves. "The old order changeth yield ing place to the new." We can. soon say in the lingo of the sons of Erin, "THlE GAMECOCK Bates them all." Georgia Tech made a record score last Saturday when opposed in football by Cumberland. The Engineers made thirty two touchdowns and kicked thirty goals making a total sore of 222.
