IRVINE BELSER WRITES OF FORT OGLETHORPI Alumnus Tells of the Southen Training Camp. Editor of THE GAMECOCK-A an alumnus of the University o South Carolina, I am taking th liberty of calling tbe attention o the members of the Universit to the opportunities offered b: the Southern Military Traininj Camp located at Fort Ogle thorpe, Ga. . Whatever may be one's view! on the desirability of universa peace, I assume that there is lit tle diversity of opinion regarding the proposition that universa peace is not attainable in th4 near future, and that if we as i nation are going to be compelle( to fight, we should be in positiot to make a good fight. There i likewi'se little diversity o opinion on the proposition tha we are at the present time la mentably unprepared to figh even a second class power. Ther4 is particularly a great need 0: officers to train volunteers ii time of war, and it is the pur pose of the camp to fit men t< fill this need. This camp is admirably equip ped to carry out the purpose foi which it was intended. It is lo cated in the beautiful Chicka mauga Park of 8,000 acres, th( scene of the famous battle ol Chickamauga, and is in the im mediate vicinity of Lookoul Mountain and Missionary Ridge, From the standpoint of location, the camp is scenically, climatic. ally. historically ideal. The in. struction which the students re. ceive is given by the officers ol the regular United States army, and it is difficult to imagine how% one could learn more in on( month than one learns here, There will be a special camy held in the summer from Jul3 5 to August 8 for college stu. (tents and I want to urge ever member of the University wh< can to attend. The entrance re quirements are not very strict and if the present bill before th( president is approved all expen ses will be paid. The Universit3 should send at least a hundrec men to the student's camp, an( when the students understan( the purpose and conditions oi the camp ..I believe they wil come. I hope the Universit> will respond to the call for prepa ration, as I know it would to the call for volunteers to defend the country-and as it did in 1861 1865-to the last man.
