Dr. Chamberlayne Writes of Rhodes Scholarship. What are the Rhodes Scholair ships? They are the bequest of Cecil Rhodes, of South Africa. who left $10,000,000 to Oxford Uni versity to provide three-year scholarships of $1500 a year to students in the British Colonies, the United States and Germany. What are the entrance require .s ments? .? First, the candidates must pass 8 the qualifying examination held every Oetober in every state. * This qualifying examination, which is not competitive, is merely to enhance examination j into Oxford. Candidates must c4 be between 18 and 24, unmar '8 ried, and at least in their second a year of college. The subjects in which they are examined are: Arithmetic, either algebra or geometry, Latin grammar, translation and composition, and Greek grammar and translation, though the requirement of Greek may be waived in the case of a student who has passed the rest of the examination, and promises to make up the Greek and pass it at Oxford before entering. . Second, of the qualified can didates that one is chosen by the committee of selection in his state, who makes the best'show ing on the basis of the scholar ship, character, qualities of leadership as indicated by pre vious activities, and fondness for and skill in out door sports. What sort ofcourse does Oxford ofer? Not solely the classics, but also inathematics, history and eco nomics, modern literature, philos ophy, anthropology, law, theol -ogy, natural science including physics, chemistry, physiology, botany, forestry. Degrees are also granted in medicine, sur gery and music. These courses are given in the most famous university of the English speaking world, and in many cases by the greatest liv ing authorities on these subjects. Following this Dr. Coward gave another French selection on his violin. The closing feature of the program was a series of lantern slides of French buildings of interest and importance, given by Prof. Teeple.
