Miss Bryant assisted by the other women students of the fourth English class, gave an in formal reception in honor of Tennyson, the poet being studied by the class, Saturday afternoon - at the Woman's dormitory from : four to half past five. Quantities of jonquills were used in decoration and each guest was presented with a daffodil -Tennyson's "lent lily" as a favor. Mrs. Ransome pour. ed chocolate, which, with dainty waffers, was served by the girls of the class assisted by Misses Minna and Catherine Love. Miss Elizabeth Chase has re sumed her studies after a short trip to Wilmington, N. C. FRITZ VON KOLNITZ COACHES WOFFORD Fritz von Kolnitz, LL. B. '13, was on the campus for a few days last week, and went out in uniform to watch the boys prac tice one afternoon. He was on his way to Spartanburg, where he will coach the Wofford base ball squad. Fritz played star ball for Caro lina both on the gridiron and on the diamond. His fast work on the field contributed largely to Carolina's victory over Clem son in 1912. For two years he caught for the Carolina nine, and was a leader with the bat as well as a star in Southern college baseball. Since graduation he has been with the Cincinnati club, but says that he has given up baseball and will in the fu ture devote his time to the prac tice of law. Bruce Coleman, head of the department of Mathe matics, delivei'ed an address be fore the members of the Inter national Polity Club last Friday night, on aviation and warfare. Professor' Coleman , gave a brief history of aviation, -out lining its development. He showed how closely the progress of aviation and war have been connected, and how the advance ment of war automatically in creases the value of aviation. He brought out the differences in the aviator of a hundred years ago and the aviator of the present day, showing how the the changes in aviation neces sitate changes in warfare. In accounting for the. German success, Professor Coleman says, that "Germany uses in her field, and in the construction of instruments of war, scientists and the best informed men of the country." Professor Coleman said that stability in aviation is the great est need of an aviator. He em phasized the importance of America bringing her scientific men into the field of effort for national defense. He touched breifly on some of the scientific points of avia tion. He refered to some of the reasons why it could he possible tnat Germany and France have transparent aeroplanes. All students of the University are eligible for membership in the organization.
