CO-ED DEPARTMENT Editor, Miss Minna Love. Miss Cunningham, M. A., '15, is teaching in the McMaster School, one of the Columbia graded schools. . Saturday morning, Oct. 2, the co-eds met for the purpose of organizing. Miss Henrietta Cov ington was elected president; Miss Eva Seawright vice-presi dent and Miss Margaret Bran denburg secretary and treasurer. Is 13 an unlucky number? The co-eds hope not and, so far at least, has not proved itself one. a There are thirteen new co-eds at the University this year, giving an average increase of about two 3 thirds over that of any previous 4 year. The causes for this increase are many. Among which, and certainly not without its weight, is the change in the attitude of the country towards the finan cial conditions. The seniors filat ter themselves that they had something to do with the in crease-and in a few cases their claim seems to he a just one. In the case of out-of-town girls the Home played a large part. Some came because they could get here a better training in their specialty; others because of certain professors; and still oth ers becauseo f an inherited love for the institution. These are all good enough and after all are they not the factors that lead one in any phase of life? Is it n)t because of getting what one wants; personal influnce; or simple love of the thing the con trolling motives in choosing one thing and rejecting the other? . But another important reason doubtless, and one not to be pas sed over lightly, is the publicity given last year for the first time to the fact that Carolina is n co educational institute. It is sur prising, to all except those who are most concerned, whom it has ceased to surprise on account of its frequency, how few people tiroughout the State know of the advantages offered their daughters along with their sons. Last June, cards advertising the new dormitory were sent to every wirl in the State who vrad uated from hieh school. While these cards did not materially in crease the number of girls stay ing in the dormitory theydid do a great deal to bring the atten tion of the public to the co educ'itional feature of the Uni versity, a feature already too long ignor( d. H. H. Peard, B. S. '14, is in the medical school of the Uni versity of Pennsylvania. Mr. Beard spent the greater part of his time while at Carolina in the laboratories of' LeCont olege.o GAMECOCK WILL CROW TUESDAY Time Changed in Order to Get More Weekly News. At a joint meeting of the two literary societies a resolution was passed authorizing the business manager to have THE GAMECOCK issued on Tuesday instead of Saturday. There are. several reasons for the change as was brought fourth in the motion that was made to create the change. Some of the reasons will be added. Most of the athletic - games are held on Saturday af ternoon. It is impossible to get a report of the game the after noon the Bird is published. Consequently, all writ-ups of the games are one week old when they are written up. Every-17 body has read the news in an other paper before that time and are interested in the coming game. There are a great many things that occur in the latter part of the week that the editor has I been unable to get printed. Thursday night Moot Court and r the Law Association meet. The 1 law editor needs some time to E prepare his copy. The Civic e Club meets twice a month on Friday nights. Often there are receptions at the colleges, at the churches, and other places on . Friday night. The societies meet Saturday night at which time they transact all their busi ness. The new plan will make it more convenient for the staff in getting their reports, and it will give the men at the press more time to do their work. Arsenal Hill Reception. The Girl's Home was the place of a reception given Friday _ night by the Young People's Society of Arsenal Hill Presby terian Church. The members who enjoyed the reception is estimated at between 50 and 70. The lower floor of the house was thrown open to the guests. Ferns cnd Chrysanthemums added to the appearanee of the rooms. A feature of great taste was the delicious cream and cake served by the little girls of the Society.
