Sometime ago Dr. -Currell call ed attention to an old rule of the University which said that every student who left Columbia Rhould get an excuse from the University president before leav ing. The reason for this rule was, according to our president, so that the students could be ac counted for when wanted, es pecially when wanted by a visi tor or for a phone call from home. It is certain that this ruling can bring about no harm, but we feel that it can do little, if any good under the present circumstances. The students would be only too eager to com ply with this rule if it brought about any advantage to them, but this is only one of the two necessary steps. As it is now, a phone-call, tel egram, visitor, special delivery letter, express package, package from a town store and numerous other things are sometimes over a day in reaching the right per son. Mail from a person who does not know our exact campus address is sometimes three or four days late, for we cannot al ways be at the post office win dow during the half hour that the door is open, especially when we are not expecting a letter. A remedy for all this trouble and confusion would be inexpen sive. All that is necessary is the employment of an assistant marshall, whose duties would be to stay at the Marshal's office all the time to receive packages, phone-calls and mail, to direct visitors to the desired place, or anything else that might be ex pected of such an officer. At present our Marshal has his hands full and has little time for such as mentioned above, tho his cooperation with the stu dents does eliminate much of the trouble. Mr. Haile's work is excellent, but if he had an as sistant with the duties men tioned above, the benefit would be great for the students. This assistant marshal could be responsible, and responsibility is the chief thing lacking. Sometime ago we knew of a per son who did not get his long-dis tance call for over three days; mail is continually being lost and is always late; parcel post packages cannot be obtained un less you - are ''Johnny on the spot" during the half-hour the post office is open; packages from up town cannot be deliv ered always to the right person and because of this they are late and cause the deliverers to make three or four trips for one ar ticle; visitors often cannot get the information they desire; tele grams have the same trouble as packages in being delivered, city phone calls often go unanswered and many times we feel that BOOKS are some o' yo minutes into an' they'll bi back' compo O int'rest. But why keep on enumerating the troubles that could be a voided, since our faculty knows of the complaints as well as we do. Two students might take the position together, they could do as well as a regular officer and and would not command as large a salary jointly as the officer.
