Modest fellow! TO THE DEBATING COUNCIL Carolina has a Debating Coun cil composed of representatives from the faculty and literary societies. This body arranges the dates of the various debates and oratorical contest held by the University. They hold only call meetings and sometimes only give the dates of the contests a few days before they are staged. This does not give the contest ants time to prepare their speeches ane causes many men not to enter because they feel unable to get up their work in so short a time. Believing that every possible thing should be done toward urging men to en ter these contests, we suggest that the Debating Council meet at the beginning of each scholas tic session and make as many dates as possible. This would tend to urge men to write early on their speeches, and the result' wili be that more men would en ter the contests. Too, accord ing to present plans of the Coun cil many cQntests are not sched uled early enough in the year; that is to say, that many con tests ought to be held earlier in , the year than in May. Many~ students do not enter these late;: contests because they have to prepare for examinations at this late date. They would possibly enter if the contests were held in February, March, or April. Otherwise the Council is to be commended for its good work. BUILDING THE FENCE The students of Carolina show ed by their action, in saying that, they would build the fence around Davis Field if the Legis lature would appropriate the money for the material, that they had the old Carolina spirit which has been characteristic of I the University since its begin ning. Every man promised to do his part when he supported the measure. Man of us know but very little about the con struction of fences, but we are not too young to learn. The old time college spirit can not prevail at Carolina until the fence has been duly built. We have shown fine spirit so far, and let us keep the good work up. At last, it seems that the students are going to support the athletic teams as they should. How long should it take 450 men to erect the fence? If enough tools can be procured the fence will be built in a single1 day. Of course, there are going < to be a few fellows who will fal! short of performing their dutyi because they are too nice or for < some other trivial reason. Are < you going to be one of these backs liders? Certainly not. We< believe that the faculty would grant a holiday for the construc tion of thin fence.
