THE CAROLINIAN THE GAMECOCK intends With the present number to set the useful precedent of. reviewing the issues of the Carolinian. In the eyes of the reviewer, for one, the appeatrance of the one representative of "mere litera ture" among the campus activi ties is at.least as important as a football game. The Christmas Carolinian, for instance, was probably welcomed with no shouts of enthusiasm when it appeared. As is not uncommon in college writing, a few men have contri buted most of the material. L. C. Johnson and J. McB. Dabbs between them wrote seven of the eleven contributions, while L. B. Harrison's sketch "Christ mas," Tyson's essay "Life and Literature,"; a short Latin poem after the mediaeval manner by .Professor Green, and a short story, "Stacked Cards", by Dan ner, are the other offerings. L. C. Johnson's "reach far exceeds his grasp," which is a good thing in a poet as in other men. His sonnet to "Winter" and "On Memory," the poem "To Lucia" and the short story "In. the Maelstrom" all show the same virtue and the same weakness a genuinely poet feeling, and a vagueness of outline which baf fles and disappo.nts. He is at a dangerous point of develp mant for a young writer-unless he goes into training, he may become a mere fluent versifier, while on the other hand he might become a real poet by dint of taking more pains. Dabbs's sonnet "The Soul" is the best piece of verse in the issue. It is true to nature -- and to nature in South Carolina-it preserves the sonnet form with out attempting to make a new set of rules for it, and it pre sents a definite thought, in quite ly effective words, on the great est theme in the world. His story "When Christmas Bells are Ringing" has true feeling, but is really iess a story than an essay, like L. B. Harrison's "Christmas", although more concentrated on the distinctly Christmas aspect of the season. The comparison of Theocritus and Virgil's Eclogues deserves praise for its unaffe.eted boldness. The reviewer would never have dIreamed anybody would dare discuss two world famous names in fifteen lines. But that: is really the way to behave to great, names, not to cringe before them. Tyson's ''Life and Literature" is one of the most readable arti eles in the number. It is crisp in style, and not only proposes to discuss literature to some pur pose, but does it. Danner's story "Saedm Cards CAROLINA TAKES CART IN INAUGUR(ATJON The, faculty and entire. stu. dent body of the niversity took part Tuesday in the inaugural ex ercises of South Carolina's new executive. They met at the li brary and marched to the capitol. The procession was headed by the faculty under the leadership of Prof. Keith. Then followed the student body under the guidance of Pres. Hill, the senior class afore and the others according to their seniority. Upon arrival at the supreme court room the body was divided forming two lines down the hall of the building. Gov. Manning and ex-Governor Smith, follov ed by their escorts, passed from the court room and walked down Detween the lines formed by the students. When the last of these had passed the studkts filed ip behind and followed the pro cession into the hall of the house of representatives. The many frie ds of F. Never contradict an irritated person. has an unhackneyed plot, but it assumes an almost incredible passivity in the characters, and all the story turns on a mechanical conception of fate. By the way, what kind of hard-hearted gov ernor was it that let a poor devil languish in the penitentiary for thirteen years, even if he was innocent? Nous (Vonrs chango tout cela!
