LAW DEPARTMENT J. B. Duffie, Editor Mr. R. P. Bellinger, a last year law graduate, who is prac ticing at Bamberg, was a visitor on Monday. The members of the senior law class rejoice over the fact that Mr. J. D. Griffith was win ner of the Roddey medal. For two successive years the law class of '15 has furnished the winner, Mr. J. S. McInnes being the winner last year. The Bib'e class for the law men met Tuesday night in Flinn Hall for the last time before the holidays begin. Dr. Burts has made the course of study very iAteresting and the men are de riving much benefit from his talks. A committee from the law as sociation has been appointed to interview the trustees at their annual meeting Dec. 23, relative to the reduction of fees of the law school to the same as last year. The committee is com posed of the following men: La Grone, Charles, Griffith, Merri mon and Pitts. Will Speak To Law Men. The president of the law as sociation has succeeded in get ting two very prominent men to deliver addresses before the as sociatio"i the first two meetings after Christmas. Mr. D. W. Robinson will speak on January 7 and Mr. R. Beverly Herbert on the 13th. B.th these men are very prominent members of the Columbia bar, and the law men are indeed fortunate to secure them. All members of the as sociation are asked to remember the date and be sure and be there. Moot Court in Session. MDat Court met Thursday ni ;ht for the last time before Xm-a. The case on trial was one invo:ving a cotton question. The facts are as follows: William Smith & Co., doing business in Char,eston, S. C., bought a large quantity of cot ton "lintera" from the Columbia Oil Mill Company, which "lin ters" is the lint from the seed ginned by the oil mills, and is worth about one-third the price of cotton. The said William Smith & Company at the time, stated to the agents of the oil mnil s, that in order to get the benefit of a lower~ shipping rate, that they wished the said "lin ter's" shipped as "cotton," and the oil mills so stated in the bills of lading. Wilson, Traveling Secretary for the Carolinas, ad dressed the Association in its last meeting before the holidays. His address was based on the parable of Christ feeding the five thousand. Just as the Savior faced a hungry world, so we to day are face to face with the same kind of world. Men are -hungering physically and intellectually, but most of all they are thirsting spiritually. It is a universal fact that every where man seeks to find God, he attem,pts to satisfy his religious craving. "It is for you to fulfill the com mand of the Lord; 'give ye them to eat;' give them the gospel of Christ for it is this that will fill every need," concluded the speaker. Mr. Wilson, an alumnus of the University, delivered an earnest and enthusiastic address. Dominick (in chemistry lab.): Hand me that hydraulic acid. bills of lading to the National Bank of Charleston and borrow ed money on them as represen tation of so much "cotton." The notes were not paid, and when the bank went to exam ine its collaterals it found that it had on hand "linters" instead of "cotton." The "linters" were sold and the loss upon the Col umbia Oil Mill shipment amoun ed to something over $13,000.00. The bank made demand on the oil mill for payment of this loss upon the grou'nd that in billing the "linters" as "cotton" they had put it in the power of Wil liam Smith & Company to de ceive the bank, and that the bank was deceived, since it ac cepted the bills of lading in good faith. The case was heard on appeal before Prof. Thomas, acting as Chief Justice and Messrs. John son and Wannamaker as Asso ciates.
