FRESHMEN WIN OVER SOPHOMORES Considerable Interest Shown In First Game Hire. Friday afternoon the freshmen defeated the sophomores in soc cer football by the score of 2 to 1. The speed of the freshmen re sulted in the defeat of the heav ier sophomores. The members of the freshman team were: Cummings, Brasing ton, McCrary, Roof, Shand, Bow en, Smith, K. D, Martin, Griffith, Barton, Ellis, Yates, Revelle, Wessinger, Fetzer, and Schneid er. The sophomore lineup was se lected from the following: Bates, W. W., Crawford, Newbold, Dabbs, Scott, Fort, Galletly, Tem pleton, McCown, Mann, Waters, Talley, Wells, Harper, Hoffman, Meares, Ard. Soccer football is a new sport in the South, but it is attracting considerable interest in the first and second year gymnasium classes. The teams that played yesterday afternoon had previously won in their respective classes. It is a rather remarkable fact that there are no teams in the southern col leges except those at Carolina. Mr. Blackburn, physical director, has shown considerable enterprise in introducing this fine winter sport. SCRUBS PLAY HEAVY TEAM TO-DAY Go to Charleston to Meet Navy Yard Team. 'lhe scrub team left Friday afternoon for Charleston to play the Machinist's Mate School of the Navy Yard. Several old varsity men, eligible for the Citadel game, will play with the scrubs. This game was transferred from Porter's to the Navy Yard team at the request of Coach Foster of Porter's who wished to have his men in good shape for the Thanksgiving game with Richmond Military Academy. It will be remembered that the Navy Yard Team put up a scrap y fight against the varsity team her.! early in the season, only he ng beaten by the score of 28 to 7. The scrub team. however, is confident of victory. The third team will probably play Batesburg High School in that city on Thanksgiving. The same team that went to B. M. I. with a (ew changes will make the trip. A special service will be held next Wednesday night at the Y. M. C. A. Rev. K. G. Filnfay, pastor of Trinity church, will be the speaker of the evening. By public. life I mean any movement that makes for the good and uplift of the people or any problem which calls for leadership. Make pub licists of yourselves, not neces sarily politicians." So said Alan Johnstone, Jr. in addressing the Y. M. C. A, >n last Wednesday evening. He pointed out that religion was broader than churches, creeds, and hymns. It concerns itself with human problems such as the sale of liquor, child labor, and compulsory education. "When we go out in our conmunities," continued the speaker, "and see the lack of literacy and the lack of intelligence of the people who compose our government it should make us sit up and take notice." When the body politic, he add ed, calls upon the best people to lead them, too often they refuse. But the college man, educated by the State and trained more thoroughly, owes a higher duty to the State than this. "By the ideals he has formed in college the college man must stand up and lead in civic re form and good government," were his concluding remarks to the large number of men who were out to hear him. Debating Council Meets. The Debating Council met yes terday in the "Green Room" of Flinn H-all, to discuss and decide upon a query to submit to the University of Tennessee andl the University of Georgia for the triangular debate with these in stitutions. The query submitted is, Resolved, "That an alliance of all American countries should take" the "place of the Monroe Doctrine."
