Fowles, risNtrteit Columbia, made an interesting and instructive talk tq 'the; iw '-Association on "Magistrate Court Pleadings and Procedure." Mr. Fowles began his address by defining the limits and juris Ation, o the court. He then .t1nk a ve y prehtjcal civil case as an illustration of every day prac tice."He showed'how an action gWM,cpmmenced, and he carried the case through the court, step . by step, until a verdict was e reached. The speaker next point i ed out how a judgment was exe cs cuted; or if an appeal was taken c4 .by bne of the:parties, what pro prs to follow. .,In short, Mr. .; Fowles told his hearers, in brief f 'foi,;hdthe law was admin C4 istered in a magistrate's court. The cnne' nf LITERARY SOCIETIES On last Saturday night the Clarlosophic and Euphradian Literay Societies disposed with their regular programs and met in joint session in the Euphra dian Hall. President J. D. Grif fith of the Clariosophic Society presided. Dr. E, L. Green addressed the joint assembly on a proposition relative to The Gamecock. His address was followed by a heat ed discussion which brought out many points in parliamentary law. EUPHRADIAN PROGRAM. Oct. 10. Readers- Brown, Wilson, Mc Teer. Dabbs, Secretary. the State vs. John Friday, on appeal, was heard. The point at issue was the distinction between murder and manslaughter. The attorneys for both sides made splendid arguments. Messrs. La Grone and Charles appeared for the appellants and Messrs. Fort and Doyle for the respondents. A decision will be rendered next week by Associate Justices Web ster and Adams. After the hearing of the case a new constitution was presented for discussion and adoption. A great many changes were made in the old constitution by the committee in charge. S. C. vs. N. C. Next Monday afternoon the Gamecocks play the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. Year before last these teams played to a tie, the seore being 6 to 6. Last year North Carolina beat us by a score of 13 to 3. We feel that in spite of the lack of interest shown by our students in football, the varsity will make a good showing in the game next Monday. "Count" Hemmingway of the class of '12 is back with us again. The "Count" after having engaged in teaching for the past two years is back to take on a little of the law.
