With this issue of the Game cock we lay down the pen and bid farewell to the world of col lege journalism. We wish to ex press our appreciation to all those who aided us in our efforts, and especially to the members of the Eupradian and Clariosophic literary societies, who saw fit to bestow upon us this honor and pleasant task of editing the Gamecock. It is with a feeling of sadness that we now turn over to the new staff the care of the bird because we realize that we have not accomplished all that we hoped to when first we entered upon our duties, and we have left many thing undone that we ought to have done, but if we have contributed at all to the fu ture success of the Gamecock we feel that we have been not alto gether a failure. We wish to express here our gratitude to the faculty, the student body and the alumni, who have given us their support at all times and have contribu-ed more than can be expressed to the successful editing of this college weekly. We set for ourselves the goal of making the Gamecock a true student body publication; to make it but an expression of campus life at Carolina. The readers know just how near we approached or how far we miss ed the goal. Our term as editor of the Gamecock with its many associa tions and practical experiences will always be rememberedI by us as one of the best periods of our stay at the University. To the incoming staff we bid God-speed; may they derive as much pleas ure from their labors as we. T1he new editor-in-chief is one of our staff andl we know that he will make of the bird a publica tion that will reflect credit upon himself nde upon the UTniversityr HIGH SCHOOL CONTEST. The inter-high-school oratorical and athletic contests held every year at Carolina bring into our midst the pick of the high school boys of the state. This University following the "Wisconsin Idea" is ever draw ing the high schools of this State closer to her, the purpose being to form throughout the State one great educational system. These high school contests are im portant in that they bring the high schools of the State in clos er touch with one another and in a measure gives to the high school student the correct idea that the high school is but a pre paratory or primary department of the state university. The future of Carolina will be in the hands of these high school boys. They will soon be going to college and probably are try ine to decide right now which one to choose as their alma ma ter. One of the most notable things that characterized the contest held here Thursday and Friday was the unity in which the stu dent body worked in trying to impress upon the high school boys the true Carolina spirit; to make them see Carolina as she really is. We believe that every boy went home with a better and clearer idea of the University of South Carolina, and we hope for their good as well as the Uni versity's that many will find their way back here as students of the University.
