CROSS--COUNTRY RACE To be Held Easter Week---A Re view of Past Races. Once again, thanks to the ac tivity of Johnny Blackburn, the annual cross-country race will be held. This will come off during easter week and will be one of the important features, both on account of this cross-country race being the first one for several years, and also because the win ner's name will be engraved on the Sylvan trophy cup, which now stands in the library. These cross-country races were begun in 1905 largely through the instrumentality of Eugene McCarthy and Scofield, students in the University. The race that year was won by Clinton F. Rainey. The course was three miles in length. The rtOnners started at the gymnasium going east down Gre'en Street and up into Shandon. From Shandon they went north through Waver ly to Hampton Avenue, down Hampton to Marion, and from there back to the corner of the campus. That in those days the Univer sity had men who could run is shown by the fact that in 1907 a team ran to Camden; and the same year a team ran to Sumter, 42 miles, in 8 hours. This team was made up of Dozier Lee, Mc Cowan, Holmes and Jack lLeeve., a brother of "Dick. '' They were enthusiastically received in Sum ter.; and to further show that they had the goods, they went to a dance that night and (lanced till midnight. 'This last is gotten from a reliable authority. In 1908 the race was won by two freshmen, "Punch'' Com mander and "flog" Oficer, "Punch" coming first. Many of the fellows w%ill remember the t.\wo men. "Hog" had a brother here last year, "Swinette." It is said that the two freshmen had to do some extra running the night after the race. In 1909, the last year that these cross country races were run, the course lay from the Ridgewood club to the State House. This race was the most spectacular one of its kind ever held here. The finish was right (lown Main Street. Thousands lined the side. walks. Two of the contestants dropied exhausted in the street. It was in this race that " Crook'' Simkins showed1 his style. lHe would sprint about a half-mile, then walk a quarter. When the other runners caught up with him, he would sprint again. And "Crook's" style won the race. But then came the hook worm with its ravages, and no man had the energy necessary for a cross country run. But this year the race is to be revived. As now p)rop)osed it will end on the camn pus, which will, in all nrobaliIi MOOT COURT MEETS Seeond Term Officers Inaugu rated---Cases Assigned. At a meeting of the Moot Court on last Wednesday night the of ficers for the second team were inaugurated and cases and at torneys assigned and appointed for one and two weeks hence. A considerable number of the law association were present, the junior class especially showing interest by turning out in good force. The placing of the jun iors on duty (luring the coming term is expected to revive much interest and energy in the Moot Court proceedings. And it is hoped that the members will do their duty by helping the new oficers to carry the work for ward throughout the year, and( to place the association on a good working basis for the years to come. Much' practical benefit can be secure(l if the members will only attend the meetings and apply themselves. As a meeting ri.reiy ever lasts more than an hour we can at least lend our support by being pro.-en t at the meetings each week. Ihe senior class has done good work in the past in connection with the Moot Court, and it is but. right that the work be condute(d through the present term and( diplomas from the law association be giv en the maduates in .Jlune. It is very gratifying to the sup )orters of the law school in par tirular and the University in general that the House of Rep resentatives has passed by suc'h an overwhelming majority the a)pro)riation bill for the new law building at Carolina. This has been a sorely need(le addition to the lniveisity for some time, and it. is to l e hoped that the Senate will look upon it in the same light as the House (lid. It does not seem probable that the Senate will kill the bill, as it passed the louse with only six votes being recorded against it. And if' the prolbability of the ap p)rOlpriation becomes a reality it is likely that the present junior class will attend ec"sses in the new building before gra(iuating from the University law school. ty, he lined with fair spectators from the women's colleges, as well as with our student body.
