COACH EDGERTON RETURNS IN 1913 Has Signed Contract to Coach the Gamecocks for the Next Three Years--His Record Here. The announcement that Coach Red Edgerton has signed a contract with the advisory board of the Uni versity to coach the Gamecocks for the next three years brings to a pleasing close a most successful year on the gridiron. Dr. Edgerton has wrought a wonderful transforma tion with the football team here and has placed Carolina on the football map among the institutions of the South. Red began his football career at Davidson, where lie cavorted around the center position for four years. He coached the Presbyterians for two years after his graduation and met with marked success. He then went to the Medical College of Charleston and while there ie coached the College of Charleston and Porter Military Academy teams with a great deal of success, turning out a strong team for the two years s he was there. This fall he came = here and took charge of the Garnet and Black aggregation with results which have become historic. Last Wednesday's Moot Court Pro ceedings. Moot court called to order by Chief Justice Rucker, Mr. \Workman sitting as associate justice. The (e cision of the last case before the court was postponed on account of the illness of Associate justice Mc Donald. The case for the present sitting was: John Dane vs. Chas. K. Morton. The facts are that Morton and one Jackson executed the following note: "Sumter, S. C., June 2, 1910. One year after (late we promise to pay to order of four hundred dollars, with interest at eight per cent. per annum. (Signed) Henry Jackson. C. K. Morton (Surety)." This note was executed for Jack son to purchase an automobile in Co himbia. Jackson a fter visiting Co lumbia decided not to purchase the automobile. Uponi his return to Sumter John Dane p)resentedl a book account to him for $150.00. Jack son saidl that he would not pay the dlebt, but wvould give the note as col lateral security. Dane knewv nothing -ab out the purpose for wvhich the note was executedl, anid accep)tedl the same as collateral security in good faith. Thereupon D)ane brought an action against Morton for the full amount. Douglas andl O'Brien appeared for plaintiff; Blackwell and McCord for defendants. In beginning of trial Attorney Blackwell submitted to the court and argued the ques tion that the defendant in this case having affirmed the material allega tions of the complaint had interposed an affirmative defense and therefore had assumed the burden of the proof and therefore the defendant should be granted the first and last hearing. After discussion the court ruled that the defendant should have first and last hearings. Thereupon the de fendant ably argued for a nonsuit. The decision will be rendered at the next sitting, )ecenber I Ith, 1912. It is understood that special ar rangements have been made with the infirmary authorities to accom modate the demands of the fresh soph game this afternoon. The College, with -various courses of study in Lan guages, History, Science, etc., leading to the degrees of A. B. and B. S. Five general scholarships, worth from $100 to $150 each. I. Graduate School, with advanced courses leading to the degree of Master of Arts. The graduates of the colleges of South Carolina are ad mitted to the University in all courses, except Law, without charge for tuition. III. The School of Commerce and Finance, with a course leading to the degree of A. B. Also special two-y.ars' course for men who expect to enter business, journalism, the public service, or law. IV.
