VOL. VI. UNIVERSITY OF SOUTH CAROLINA, COLUMBIA, S. C., NOVEMBER 16, 1912. No. 7. GARNET AND BLACK HOLDS NORTH CAF TWO CAROLINA TEAMS FIGHT FIERCE DRAW Crippled Gamecocks Play Big Opponents to Standstill. Weakened by Absence of Mills and Passailaigue, But Force Fighting in Every Quarter-Score 6-6. Chapel Hill, N. C., Nov. i i. (Special)-All the dope handed out hereabouts was upset Saturday af ternoon when the University of South Carolina showed surprising strength and held the North Caro linians to a 6 to 6 tie. This is the first time in the history of contests between the two teams that the ag greation from the Palmetto State has uriied such a trick and the per formance came as an eye-opener to local fans. The visiting team was not up to its usual form, due to the absence of a regular full back and tackle, but showed an astonishing offense. With the regulars in the line-up, Passailaigue at full back and Mills at tackle, it is not at all im probable that victory would have gone the way of the visitors from 'South Carolina. The local team outweighed the South Carolinians by about ten pounds to the man, but an aggres siveness and general versatile attack on the part of the visitors made up for the handicap of insufficient avoirdupois. The best ground gainer in the visitors' repertoire of plays was a sweeping end run behind per fect interference with vonKolnitz and Heyward generally carrying the ball. The cross tackle buck was worked successfully several times. -though the heavy line of the locals prevented long gains on the play. vonKolnitz's Toe. The scoring of each team was ac complished by two field goals, von Kolnitz using the toe for the South Carolinians and Stevens pulling the same stunt for the Tlarheels. HeIy ward for the visitors had a touch dlown practically in his grasp which would have won the game but slip) ped and fell when a few yards from the line. S. C. Line Strong. The varsity seconds made a brilliant showing in every department. The line opened up speedways through which the fleet backs went for long gains, the interference would have made the varsity envious and on the defensive the cadet plays were crumpled up with ease. So good were the Gamecocklets' transporta tion facilities that five touchdowns were piled up. After the first five minutes the academy was never dan gerous. The final score was 32 to 7. However, against their heavier and more experienced o)ponents the cadets p)layed football that was a surprise to the Carolina team. They fought gamely throughout and. in the first quarter, were dangerously near the Carolina goal line. Perry at tackle for Porter played star hbil and in the third quarter inte cep. a forward pass and wvent o.et fo the cadets' only touchdowvn. Wish Privilege of Voting in General Election for All Qualified College Students of State. The Civic club of the University of South Carolina, an organization devoted to the study of govern mental problems, municipal, State and national, at its regular weekly meeting Thursday evening passed a resolution pledging itself to take some active steps looking to the en actment of a statute giving college students 21 years of age and over the right while at college to vote in general elections. There are within the several colleges of the State many hundreds of students of voting age and the university Civic club will seek the co-operation of sister institutions in accomplishing its ends. A similar move has been taken by the students in the colleges and universities of the State of New York. The. primary election, which arouses the greatest amount of local interest, is held in August when col lege men are at their homes, so the statute which the Civic club seeks to have enacted will apply only to the November election. The uiiversity was strong in its support of Wood row Wilson in the recent election. but enthusiasm availed nothing with out votes and the Civic club intends that in coming elections students in the colleges of this State shall have the privilege of exercising their suf frage, or it will not be the fault of the club if such privilege shall not he obtained. VARSITY TAKES SHOT AT ACADEMY ELEVEN Will Try to Go Scrubs One Bet ter in Record Score. Team Will Be Weakened idy Absence of Mills and Passailaigue-Many Scrubs Will Work. Manager FitzSimons, after fruit less negotiations with other larger institutions, announces finally that Porter Military Academy will meet the 'varsity on Davis field this.after noon. The Gamecocks are at 'the height of form now and efforts were made to have them play a stronger team, but these were unavailing. Nevertheless Porter has a classy team for a prep school and may sur prise Carolina. Under the instruc tion of Coach Foster they have had a good season. Their strength sur prised the scrubs on Saturday last. In Perry at right tackle Porter has a promising lineman and the side lines will do well to watch him today. Strohecker and Pink ney are a pair of fast back field men. Several stars will be missing from Carolina's line-up. Big John Mills has not yet returned from a trip home, where he was called.by illness in his family. Dutch Passailaigue is not yet in trim, although improv ig. Many of the scrubs will probably get a chance of figuring in this 'var sity game. The coaches are much pleased over their work in Charles ton last Saturday. Glee Club Elects Officers. For the purpose of reorganization and making plans for the year, the Glee Club met Thursday afternoon in the chapel and elected officers. Those elected were as follows: Pres ident, Neps McCrady; vice-presi dent, H-1. S. Reeves; manager, Allan M. Paul. Professors Reed Sn;th and Sidney Cohen were elected to serve on the advisory hoard with the president of the club. A meeting for the purpose of trying out new material will be held in the chapel Monday night. Several members of last year's organization are hack and wvill serve as a nucleus for this year's club. Manager Paul wvill immediately look into the matter of arranging trips to be taken during the coming months. Offers have been received from several of the cities visited last year and these will probably be included in some of the tours.
