CAROLINA WINS FIRST GAME OE SEASON Wake Forest Loses to Gamecocks. Game Fast and Brilliant in Spots. The University eleven met Wake Forest for the first game of the season on the gridiron Saturday afternoon, October 5. The de fenders of the Garnet and Black goal had the ball for the greater part of the game. The Baptists played good ball and several times threat ened to cross Carolina's goal, but the stiffening of the Gamecock line pre vented the Tarheels scoring. One of the features of the game was the way in which the line held for VonKolnitz to get off the place kick that scored the first three points of the game. The Carolina eleven as a whole did excellent work. VonKolnitz, Heyward, Hill, Passaillaigue, \Veh man and Dunn were the shining lights among the wearers of the Garnet and lack. SOCIETY NOTES. 'here will be no notice posted at the landing of the library stairway in the future advertising "books (ue today." Mr. Kennedy feels that the (late stanlpel in the back of the book will be suflicient to let the students know when the book is due to be returned. Library Pays Tribute to James Whit comb Riley. Last week the librarian )osted in the entrance of library a large por trait of James \Vhitcomb Riley, as well as the picture of his birthllace and later home, in observatiOn Of Riley week, which was noted in some manner by all the large public libraries throughout the State. Mr. Kennedy has consented to get out all magazines and papers bearing on the subjects to be debated in the literary societies and place them in a convenient place early in the week. This will )rove a great benIefit to the men who have to get upj the (debates and no( dloub)t will be highly appreciated b)y all. An Old Maid's Account of a Joy Ride. \Ve had only gone about seven miles and the battery began feeding currents to the engine and sparking with her in a most shocking fashion under her hood. Then the gears fell to embracing each other; the tires, too, took oi lots of airs, and, becoming intich inflated, kept hang ing around the wheels. The cush ions got to acting so soft with the gasoline (which, by the way, was tanked) that the fly-wheel got cranky and so exhausted the engine that she choked and we had to fan her. Work on New Dormitory is Being Pushed. The new dormitorv hehind De Saussure is rearing its walls sky ward. Multitudes of workien are busy rushing the building to co'm l)letion. \Vlen finished this will be the most mllodcrn rooming al)artlent on the canl)us. The building in appearance will be in keeping with the other new buildings at the Uni velsity. It is hoped that the work can be finished at an early date, for the congested c+>ndition in the old dormitories calls for more room for the students. The next game on the hmle ground will he with Clemson here fair week.
