Patterson WNIardlaw, lead of the
department of pedagogy, and E. I...
Green, of the department of ancient
languages, have resigned their po
sitions on the faculty of the Unliver
sitY of South Carolina to take up a
stage Career. This action on the
part of two of the llost popllar
and eminent professors of the Uni
Versity came as a sudden surprise
to the students and other professors.
The fact is, Professors Wardlaw
and Green did not know themselves
that they woud abandon teaching
for the histrionic art unlit late
Wednesday night, when they ac
cepted a tempting offer to play the
leading roles in "Mlilt and Jeff."
TIhey kindly sI lbst ituted at. tle
matinee and Iight performances at
the Columbia theatre Wednesday
and the management was so highly
pleased with their work that the
regular performers were "fired"
and the two professors signed. As
to who will succeed them on the
faculty is not known, nor has it yet
been announced who will ileet their
classes. Dr. Mitchell will make an
announcement in chapel.
Sooni after the "Mutt and Jeff"'
compllany arrived in Columbia
Wednesday morning the actor whlo
plays Jeff studdoenly became ill andl
the management saw lhe w~ouldI he
unable to play the matinee and pos
sib)ly not thle night Per fornmance.

The burden of .\1iss Rion's Iper

dead weight on the activities of the
Christian .1iurclh, but are inl a very
real sense a positive hiindrance to its
