Tlie preliminary to the Clario sophic intra-society declaimers' con test was held Friday night, and the debaters' preliminary will be held W'ednesday night of next week. A limited number constituting:the best will compete for the medals to be awarded in the final contest on April 14th. Nothing definite has been reached by the Euphradians concerning their similar contest. However, it is to be held later. Dr. Owens, a former student of the University and a member of the Clariosophic Society, who is now a physician of the city, was in the society hall Saturday night. He Cc brought a rather brief but earniest 2~ and inspiring message. At the last meeting J. M. Melin tosh was elected a regular member of the Clariosophic Society. Next Saturday night is -the regu lar time set apart for the election of officers. This being the case, all literary exercises will be dispeised with. Beginning next session, an im portant course of study will be added to the curriculum of tihe University of South Carolina. The course is especially designed to fit men for social and religious work in South Carolina. The Lutheran and Presbytcrian Theological Seiinaries have agreed to co-operate with the University in several branchcs of study to be com prised in the new course. The following course (or its ac cepted equivalent) is offered to stu dents having in view social or vel fare work iii Young Men's Christian Associations, or in mills or other social service, or as preparation for the study of the ministry. In lieu of the first two years as here outlined may be substituted the first two years of any other baccalaureate course (A. It., or 1-. S.), or such other equivalent as may1 be approved by the faculty. Also, properly quali fled persons may take selected por tions of this course without refer ence to a degree. The studies comprised in the new course follow: First Year. (I) Language, Latin or Greek; (2) Language, Latin, Greek, French or. German; mathematics. history, English. gymnasium. Second Year.
