Three weeks before exams-put ill some good work. A great many University men are in the Legislature. Here's hoping they will work for us. During the coming year work for the publications. Don't leave it.all for the other fellow to do. P)ut in your share. The celebration of Founders' Day is a memorable occasion in the life of the University. Lend your presence this afternoon. The General Assembly is now in session. This is a great opportunity to hear some good speaking and to fail iarize yourself with parliamentary rules. Try to spend your leisure hours in the State H-louse. THE PAST YEAR AND THE FUTURE. Our remarks here will be brief, simu ply plain facts and figures that speak for* themselves. What has the University (lone dtur ing 1910, and wvhat has 1911 in store for us?' The year of grace 1 910 saw the studlent body increasedl to over -100 umen, an increase of 75 imn over the previous year, muaking the p)resenlt enrollment thme largest in thue history of the University. It saw the opening of the newv, magnificent $10.000 Science II all, the gift of the L egislature. It was ini that year that the Y. M. C. A. camne into being wvith Flinn Hall, the home -oT the college men. The new gymnasium, with its excellents baths, was put in shape andl now only awvaits an annronnriation from the TLeieltwm for equipping it, when it will be one of the best gymnasiums in the South. The central heating plant was begun, and, like the gymnasium, awaits an appropriation for completing it. New sleeping apartments were made from the space formerly occupie<l by the geology dlepartment and the State Board of Health. This gave room for 20 additional students. An extensive course of lectures was inaugurated, bringing before the student body and the citizens of Columbia lecturers of note, who dealt with questions of great importance to the pre:-.eit time. The above are plain facts and figures that show what the University did during the past year. What has 19 11 in store for us ? We can see the building of a new chapel, for which we hope the Legislature will appropriate the necessary funds. The conversion of the present chapel, two lawx and two department of education rooms, ipto sleeping apartments, thus giving space for 50 more students. The extension of the central heating plant to the dormitories and class room111s. The complete equipment of the gymnasium, with a swimming pool. A regular salary for the Y. M. C. A. secretary. and some additions to Flinn Hall, in the shape of a hall for meet ings. These are some of the things we hope to see come about. If they are accomplished the University will be a greater and grander University and sill more than ever fulfill its mis sion and luty to the State. \1 these improvements lie within ithe will of the Legislature. We hope that it will be their wish to see them come about. The student bodyv and faculty are co-operating and working logether for the upbuilding of a greater University. The Legislature only needs to join with us in making the year 1911 the greatest in our his tory. Dr. Lowell, president of Harvard University, in some recent remarks put himself on record as being op posed to the cheering as nov con ducted in the intercollegiate athletic games. From all quarters of college America comes a storm of protest against the remarks of the doctor. These protests come, not only from the students, but from college presi dents as well. We join heartily in the protest. College cheering is all right; let it alone. Nothing is more inspir ing to the laboring team than some good. lusty yelling. Many a football, as well as baseball, game has been won by the side lines. A game would be a funeral indleedl without some noise. The rah, rah boy is all right ; don't take from him privilege of making noise. WVe fear the venerable (doctor slipped up in his remarks. IHe is on one sidle of the fence all by himself. Alumni Smoker Tonight. Tonight at 10 o'clock in Flinn Hall will be held the annual alumni smoker, given by the Univ'ersity to the alumni, guests of honor and friends of the University. Last year this smoker wvas one of the most pleasant features in connec tion with Founders' Day. It is the purpose of those in charge to make the smoker tonight still nicer. Many Good Work. The many students that knew Sid ney Cohen last year will be glad to hear that lie is improving from his recent sickness. Mr. Cohen was taking architecture at the University of Penn sylvania and on account of his sickness had to be taken home. Charlie: "I'm going to kiss you wVIhen I go." Maude: "Leave the house at onice." Senior: "Going up to hear that l.ecture on appendicitis today?" Bright Freshie: "Naw, I'm tired of those organ recitals.-Ex. Mr. Frank Spigener spent the holi (lays in Columbia, but has now re turned to his school in Elko (which is near Blackville).
