Wonder if we can get along without that "Grand Ok( Class" of 1910? Guess we will have it to do, eh ? Just think what a fine "gym" we will- have next- year. '-There hag-been some talk about a swimming pool on the ground floor, and we hope that this important move will not cease until the real "11-2 0" is there. When the class of 1911 entered the University they were given a "grand welcome" in the chapel a few morn ings after they reached here. At this meeting of the students and faculty, there were several excellent speeches delivered. The presidents of the two societies each gave an address inviting all the new men to join one of the two societies. Then the president of the student body made a talk advising the new men .on some serious topics which are met with in college life. There were other speeches which were of great benefit to the new men. This meeting bore some good fruit and we wish to urge that a similar program he arrangedl for next year. We wvould suggest that at the beginning of next year the faculty select twvo of its mem hers to speak, and that the president of the student body, the twvo presidents (of the two societies and the piresidlent of the Y. M. C. A. talk to the "new comners" about their resp)ective depart nWents. We beg that this will not be oyerlooked and that we will see the fruits of this item next fall when wve return. SThe GAMECOCK is a weekly paper which shiould inform every student of the UJniversity of all the proceedings whitl1 take place on the campus. Therre is -one thing which has been overlooked. upon this campus for many vears past That ls a meitt-- m'eo of every business manager of the pub lications, football and baseball mana gers and the secretary of the Athletic Association. We think that the stu dent body should pass a rule requir ing each of these men to give written, itemized statements of all money re ceived and all expended to the editor of the GAMECOCK to be published. This would permit each student to see what becomes of the money which he gives to the different organizations. We do not mean to say that we are afraid to trust any man whom we elect to these offices, but we would simply like to see when, where, and how, it goes, and then when. we see what ex penses are necessary we will probably be more willing to donate our money to these diffeirent phases of college life: Many, many years ago, before any of the present student body entered the University, every dormitory on the campus had the name of the col lege, and several electric lights above it, upon each building. By neglect on the part of some one we no longer find this the case. When vistors come to see us, it is impossible to find any particular building without inquiring all around, and having it pointed out to them. Likewise, when the new men enter each year, probably at night, they are sometimes forced to stay out in the city, simply because they cannot find their assigned room, and are a little too shy to inquire. These lights-are almost an absolute necessity, and we hope that next year when we return we will see the fruits of this suggestion, and as we walk ip the campts we will see Rutledge, De Saussure, Lega-e, Harper, Pinckney and Elliott, all in "dazzling letters of g>ld,'" with three or fo;r bright glim niering lights above them'. - Some one might say that the boys will break them down ahnost as soon as they are placed up there, but to this I will say that there was a - different student body here when the lights were torn down, and if they are replaced I feel sure that our students will see the good derived from them and, will not break them down. We trust that no such insigni ficant idea will keep the good work from proceeding as it should. Farewell to Sentors. (Continued from Page One.) gentleman who in voicing public senti ment as regards adjournment in favor of shows and Shandon, is without an equal; while the other must forfeit the railer who wvas her pride, as well as the modifying influence of tihe parson who was as his check. Carolina for some time back has been noted for her poets. What, nowv, unless some hitherto private wooers of the Mvuse be unearthed, shall become Did You Es stop and think wvhat it overlook paying your s contracts -with our ad numlier of issues and y needed. Doli1 of our reputation ? And those knights of the quill, who have written us up so handsomely for the local press, what shall we do for lack of them? That unique collection gathered about the/Marshal's office, for gossip, 'phoning' mail and marks, what is destined to be its ruin unless some genius arise gifted in voice and wit equal to the present predominating in stance of campus harangue! As the college career of this class of 1910 has been eventful, so its future is bright. Many professions through out this and other States will be strengthened by the addition of these men from Carolina. The Bench will soon be influenced, and we can hope some (lay swayed, by the law class. The plans projected so largely by the University for the upbuilding of rural and other public schools, dre to be car ried out with the co-operation of m6n trained here for this mission. In ora tory, In higher education, in architec ture, in civil engineering, and in jour nalistic professions, the class is to make itself felt. Nor is the influence of our Seniors to end altogether with Carolina. Some of the larger universities in the North are to feelF the effect through more than one ambitious student, of his Alma Mater. Men are leaving to spe cialize upon the ground-work gotten here, and are some day to return with increased honors, for themselves and for the institution which, no matter where they may make names, must be connected with their success and a sharer in their glory. And so, farewell! And when the Seniors shall have gone from this cam pus out into the wide world, may they feel themselves ever linked to Carolina with that friendship which, as certain of their own. poets has said, is "The unspoken sympathy, Of mind and mind, heart and heart, soul and soul And ever-blooming rose, a star, a scroll Of silver that no one may read save he For whom 'twas written, a trust that gives in fee All faith, honor, riches, power, and the whole Complete self."
