Y. M. C. A. Report of E. N. Carns, Presi dent of Y. M. C. A. The present (retiring) chair was elected at the last meeting of the As sociation last spring, so that he was unable to make anly appointments as to committees, etc. The Association did, however, get together a delega tion and send to the Annual Student Y. M. C. A. Conference of the South eastern States, held at 'Montreal, N. C., Junle 11-20. The CX)CsCs of these delegates amounted to about $25 each, all told; the Assocation had three men -Rector, Mellichamp and Carns-at Montreat, making about $75 ex)ended there in the interest of the Association. During the summer, the chair and the officers wrote to )rospIective students of the University, assuring them of the good intentions of the Association, and soliciting their good will and co operation. Paper for this purpose cost the Association $2.25. \Vhen we got back this fall, our first thought was to set the Y. M. C. A. on a firm footing; so, with the kindly aid of a number of students, we set to work, meeting trains, giving new ar rivals cordial welconies, and assisting them in every way possible. Our first meeting of the year was held on Sun (lay afternoon of September 26th. At this opening meeting, we booked some thirty-eigh>t members for the Associa tion. The following week we made a raise for our Y. M. C. A. reception, which had not been held last year for lack of funds. We raised about $85 for this purpose and for the scidiiig of delegates to the Bible Study Con ference at Spartanburg. The recep tion was held Thursday night, Septem ber 30th, and was one of the best that our Association has ever given. Out of the above iiamed funds, the Asso ciation also sent eight delegates to Spartanburg, October 1-3. The next work of the Association was a canvass of the campus for mem bers. This was done through commit tees, an( we are sorry to report that the committees for one or two build ings did not do the work assigned to them. Through these commit-tees, however, the membership was in creased. The next task that we ndertook was the sending of a delegation to the Student Volunteer Convention, held in Rochester, N. Y., December 29th January 2d. Our Association, wi.th the help of the University and its out sidLe friends, sent three dlelegates to Rochester-Prof. A C. Moore. J. P. Evans andl R. N. Carns. The cost of sendling these dlelegates was about $60) each, or $180 for the delegation. In structive rep)orts of this convention were made to the Assocation by each member of the dlelegation. Tlhen the Association sent two (delegates to the Student Volunteer Convention of South Carolina, held at Greenville, February 11 -13. These (delegates cost the Association $8. (VVe have just heard, with p)leasure, the repo0rts of this dlelegationi.) The Association has paid its share of the salary of the student secretary for the colleges of the Carolinas--$15. This is the first time we have paid this alary in three year.. These, including the few dollars given to the Bible study department, constitute the expenditures of the pres ent administration, making the total outlay of the Y. M. C. A., during this administration, about $275. \Ve must admit, however, that the delegates on the various trips always (i(d a noble part in helping the Association meet their expenses. The A ssociation has been addressed from Sunday to Sunday by the ablest speakers available. There have been no spiritual manifestations, or out bursts, but the day of old-time halle lujahs has past. \We believe that the Association is doing good, but that there is room for it to do yet more goo(l. It should be made a campus wide, a University movement. A large number of students are indiffer ent towards our Association and the principles for which it stands. This indifference nust be supplanted by an admiration for the Association before the Association can (1o its best work. -NOTCH BELMONT The "Ara-Notch" makes the "Belmont" ARROW COLLAR Sit Perfectly 15c,2for25c.
