The 30th of June was spent most pleasantly by a small crowd, on the banks of the beautiful Broad. The crowd began to gather early and continued coming until 12 o'clock. The seiners soon caught an abundance of ; the finny tribe and they were soon nicely prepared for dinner. At 1 o'clock th2 welcome sound of dinner was announced and we liestened to the spot where an elegant dinner had been prepared. Mrs. W. B. Gibson deserves special credit for the successful arrangement. Everything passed , ol? very pleasantly until 3 o'clock, when the train killed a fine mule belonging to W. P. The sermon by Ilev. A. J. Sickes, of Newberry, S. t\, wa> a nrong and clear presentation of the truth. The speaker discussed in a forcible and impressive manner: 1. What is the Church of God? 2. What i-= the duty of the church? 3. What is the individual member's duty to the church? After ihe killing of the mad dog on J last Sunday meaning vrc thought we j would ask several gentlemen for an opinion as to the cause of this terrible disease. One gentleman expressed an opinion that a diseased condition of j the stomach causes an emission of ' virus or poisonous fluid: another said; that for some years the opinion was! held that the tooth of the dog bccaiae | ? i diseased and a bite frem such a tooth will produce the trouble. Then again the opinion prevails that all do^s arc liable by nature to go mad in what is j known as the "dog days." However, i upon inquiry, we find that this par-! ticular mad dog was the property of Robert Jakes. A gentleman, who had ! I put himself to some trouble to <ret the particulars, said that Robert reports that he was hunting 'possums on ; Saturday night with this particular' dog in question and that he heard the dog in the woods and he could tell from his barking that he had treed. Upon reaching tire tree Robert claims to have counted eleven ?pos?uni$ in the tree and two on the ground near I the tree. So the theory advanced by the gentleman is that this dog was not ; "i i liiuu. at an? uuc >\ .15 vua ? iruici* cvuhm? j coukl not stand the sight of so mail}/ I -possums and commenced to run. i)iv he made a fatal mistake and all Jr cause "Robert shined the eye of thin ^ 11 Opossums. J I r.?Latest U. S. Gov't Report 1 ay pure POTATO MKAL Y\'coJward lias been toAus:u<*a C'M a vi-sit to examine a machine for <ining potatoes. At Col. A. P. Butier's, who lives near Augusta, be met 2\ir. Alex. Conacher, from Scotland, who has had practical experience in drying and making starch from Irish - -. i potatoes. Mr, Conaclier is favorably impressed with the potato meal idea. He perfected the machine in Augusta and will hare built and will erect one at Iiockton for Maj?r Woodward. Mr. Conacher does not think the sweet potato is availobie for starch making; lie says it contains too much sugar; that the Irish potato contains starch almost entirely. In England when I^VlUiUCO ill C iiyvuLu Vil iuv they nre l;- ugiit for the starch mill?, dried ami round ami then made into staicii. v? e hope the machine may prove a *access at Rockton. This gentleman say? for table use he thinks it beet not; to grind the potato but to use it sliced; that he has eaten the sweet potato which had beeu dried after it was two years old and that the flavor was splendid. If sweet potatoes can be kept for two years and retain a good flavor, we certainlv think a great point has been gained: lor me great, trouble is to keep sweet potatoes in this country. The machine has a boiler, a guage and safety valve, and no chance to burn or even parch them too much. We shall await with great interest the advent of the drying machine.
