rue KI.VU OK THK PAPUANS. ' A Strange 31 nn Who Had 3?aay Adventures lu tbe Pacific. About three weeks ago an explorer died j in St. Petersburg who was known far and wide among the Russians as "King j o{ the Papuans." It was Dr. MaklucboJ M*clay, tte noted Russian ethnologist,) in whose honor a long stretch of the northeast coast of New Guinea, now in the hands of Germany, is called the ; SLtciav coast, few explorers have braved more hardships and dangers than Dr. iiaclay, and'pure love of science induced iiiti? to iacur perils from which most men ttAn'/l o^tnTilr A few years ago a schooner dropped author one evening in an unknown baj on the New Guinea coast. Boats put ofl', landed Dr. Maclay and his boxes on the betech, and then the schooner sailed awa^ iii the darkness, leaving Dr. Mac&y alone on a ravage coast that no white man. had ever vudted before. When the natives neit morning found the white man hitting on his portmanteau tbt-y thought the strange object had dropped from the iky. They believed at fiiv. th*t he was a god, and they nearly kilh d b.ji with experiments before they decided that he was human like themselves. They fastened him in a hut, put guards around the structure and nearly starved him, thinking that if he were not ol human origin he did not need food. They said that nothing ought to frighten feitn if he were a god, and so they tied him to a tree, shot arrows close to his ^ nn/Q C?iTfOr^ltr WAllTlflpH UC?U oua ucva auu osiuvij hiai during the experiment. Then the} prt ssed their spears against his teeth 1 nuke, him cpen his month, and in many other wa}s they put his courage, temp*, r and strength to severe tests. They finally made up their minis that he was not a god, because his wound bitd and he needed food; but they decided he was a capital fellow because he was always goodoatured. ^lany of their tack recovered health ur .-his. skillful care, and Dr. Maclay ally acquired the reputation far and v iia of being a big medicine man who hi i dropped from the moon. For two years Br. Maclay lived among these savages, feeling amply repaid for all his sacrifices by the wealth of scientific facts he was able to collect. Four years ago, Mr. Eomilly, Great Britain's Commissioner for the * Western Pacific, visited Astrolabe Bay. "The ? natives were rather shy at first." he wrote, "until I shouted the magical name N - Mack,; then they came up as fast as the} Vialri /vf thft few Wfirds %VIUVM JLSJ w?v v- .. Maclay had -written down for me, I was able to. inform then: that he would come back to them soo-j. They at once became extremely friendly, and kept ou telling each other that 1 was Maelay'a brother. It is possible that they were more civil to me than the; wonld be to every one, owing to the fact of my acquaintance with Maclay, which I made the most of." Over a year ago it was 'announced that ? Maclay was about to lead 250 Russian colonists to New Guinea to settle on the coast which he was the first to visit The Kosfiifm Government, however, disooaraged the project, and it was abandoned. The Gemans are now planting their stations along' the coast, which RomiUy says is the most beautiful he ever saw, and in his book he fully confirms the favorable report that Dr. Maclay gave oi this part of the great island. Though only 42 years old when he died, Dr. Maclay had traveled more extensively in the Western Pacific than any other scientific man, and it.is to be regretted thai the account of his protracted explorations, which he had been writing foj many months, was only half completed when lie died. 1^=^ TO SPAN THE HUDSON. ^Brooklyn Bridge a Small Affair b] tha]r th^^S^ne/of^the projector bridg< fr across the Hudson "River at New Yori city, is in "Washington looking after the : - legislation asked of CoDgress. '"The Brooklyn Bridge'' said Mr. Lindenthal, *5*3! be cf small consequence in compari.scHrwith the structure we propose. Tm latter will be the largest bridge in tht world. The middle span will be 2f850 feel long, and the end spans 1,500 feet. W< proposed to start at the high ground on the Jersey side, known as Castle Point, and in New York about Fourteenth strett. "We will have six railway tracks, and pas sengers from any part of the country will be brought to a comfortable station in th? heart of the city, within reach of the ele __ vated and surface railroads: "This will obviate the necessity of ferrying passengers aaoss '.lie river, frequently at great risk from fog md ice, and landing them- in the most unattractive part of New York. The bridge can be built for $16,00ft,000, and we shall have no trouble in raising the money. The investment wil] necessarily yield a handsome profit, for the business transacted Will be something enormous. The whole matter has been thoroughly thought oat, and by men fully com petent to the task. The surveys have been made and the plans adopted meet the approval of all interested."
