a?????a?1??an?BM The Gua of tbe Future. Cap^ai*. Day, of tbe United States army, is an ex pert in rifles, and in a recent , interview with & New York Times report- \ er talked tbas about the future of the j rifle: I am willing to go on record as pre- ; dieting that the electric grin will be the , gun o? the future. A number of electric , gans have been fitted up, but they are j not as yet on sale to the public. Electr city may be adapted to almost any good gun. Here is a Hotchkiss, for instance, with a belt action and electric fire. It has a magazine in the stock, and h vtry convenient bolt. Like any otfcer first-class arm, it may be fired either by jr* rcnssion or electricity. The Hoichkiss differs from the Lee in that the Lee cock* it clnyng, while this cocks for the next shot in opening. This gnn has been transformed from an ordinary percussion to -one for electric fire. There is, as jot see, a small battery similar to the Leclanehe in the stock. It is a chlorate of silver battery, and there is no coni>u~jption of material except when the cartridge is in place and the finger on the trigger. There is no cocking or uncocking. The electricity ignites the powder directly, without aoy hammer or mainspring whatever. This device quadruples at least the life of an ordinary fehell. The igniters used are not more 6XpCB82?0 xuan' U16 prcwub pciuiuoivu i caps. One of these little batteries has I been subjected-to a-'te t of thirty-three j thousand shots without being recharged. Curloiities of Magnetism. Most well-informed people are doubtless aware that the globe on which their life is a great ball of magnetism, bnt comparatively few have an adequate idea of the influence this propety is continu ? ally exerting on all sides, that many common but inexplicable phenomena can be traced directly to the source. Statistics go to show that in the matter of steel rails, as many as thirteen will become crystallized and break where they go to make up ? railroad track iuuning east and west, before one of those on a north and south track is similarly affected, Thiols entirely due to the magnetism generated by friction, and the fact that the polarity of the magnetic current is in the the former instance resisted in the headlong rush of the train, whereas in fVio laifAT ?t is nndisturbed. Another strange effect of this peculiar * and occult force is that exerted on the watches, of trainmen. A timepiece car ?ried by the conductor running a train twenty miles an hour, however accurate it may be* will, if the speed of the train is increased to, say fifty miles, become useless until regulated. The magnetism generated by the flight of a train maybe said to be in propotion to the speed with which it is propelled, and the delicate parts of a watch, numbering all the way from four hundred to ten hundred pieces, and peculiarly susceptible to this influence by reason of hammering and polishitfrthej T have received, are not slow to feu the effect ? Edmunds on the Political Situation. In an elaborate article in. the Forum for July, Senator George F; Edmunds wilireviewthe present political situation. ' He-points out the reasons why he is a Bepnblican, and" in effect constructs a ?/Kim-noiocn TTo puuuiau yiauuiu ivi uua uv goes over the history of the two parties, sod ^hows that the two principal facts ill Democratic history are a tendency to free trade and responsibility for the rebellion; and he recalls the criticism made of Republican government by the Democrats four years ago?that Republican administrations had been corrupt; and the chief promise of the Democrats ?that there should be honest civil service reform. The Republican service hat; not been found corrupt, and practical^ all Bepublican office have been replaced by Democrats. The principles and aims__of" the Re? publican party are thus^t by Senator (1) "The^uliest defense and promoi tioji at .all. times and in all places of equal political and civil rights of citizens of the United States." (2) "To aid in the increase of public education by generous grants of money from the common treasury." (3) "To revise the^ details and correct the inequality that may exist in the custom"iawscpon the broad and fundamental basis always of the constant protection and encouragement of every American production, every American industry and every American laborer." .??) To diminish exuberant revenues by the redaction or abolition of internal taxation." ? (5) "To suppress and .eradicate the debaucheries of.the civil service." -.A ^ t_ . TliejWere Married. The Qjnaha: Bee tells this amusing story of a marriage in the early days of Nebraska: A newly elected justice of the peace, who had been used to drawing tip deeds and wills and little else, was called up to marry a couple in haste. Bemoving his nat,'he remarked: "Hats off in the presence of the Court." All being uncovered, he. proceeded : holdup your right hand. You John "Wftukin, do yer solemnly swear' to the beet of yer knowledge an' belief that yer nnman frv 'ho-tyn arirl li/il/l fnr uaag w to nvuiou w ??TV UV?M *v* yerself, heirs, exeeyrtere, adminiatrateis and assigns for yer and their use forever?" "Ido,"answered the groom, promptly. "Yon, Alice Evans, take tttis year man ior yer husband, ter have and ter hold forever; an* yon do solemly swear that yer lawfully seized in fee simple an' free from all encumbrances, and have gocd right to sefi, bargain an' convey to said gurantee, yeiseif, yer heirs, administrators ftiri assigns?" "I?I do," said the bride, doubtfully. S? "Well, that 'er's worth a dollar 'n fifty cents." "Are we. married?" asked the bride. ''Yes. Know all men by these presents, that I being in good health and of sound mind and disposition, in consideration of a dollar'n fifty cents to me in hand well an' truly paid, the receipt whereof is hereby acknowledged, do an' by these presents have-declared you man an' wife durin' good behavior, an' until otherwise ordered by the Court." m ? m The Sparkling Catawba, This celebrated watering place, under Ec u: xlo jwx . , 0. Elliott & Son,'thre^ open its doors on the 1st of J one. Aside from from its valuable health restoring mineral waters, including white and red sulphur, lythia. iron, etc., it is one of the mob pleasant places in Western North Carolina to spend the hot months. Natural scenery abounds on all sides? not less than half dozen peaks of noted mountains can be seen from the cupola of the "Old Castle." The temperature ranges there in July from 54 to 79 degrees. Its great age is proved by historic ^ ciunents, according to Sir Jam s Eznmerson Tennet, who says: "To it kings ! have dedicated their dominions in testi-! mnnv nf hplipf that it is a branch of tho ! identical fig-tree under which Bu;!<la' reclined at Urumela when he underwent! his apotheosis."
