Dsath of Mrs. Jane Maddkx.? Mrs. Jauc Madden died suddenly oil ast Monday at G o'clock. She was 8G i*cars old at the time of her death, and for years has been confined to the louse. She was a Miss Cat heart and :ame over to this country from Ireland about the year 1S20. She was a ?ister of the late Robert Cathcart, who. tvith David Aiken, did most in buildup up Winnsboro. She married the Rev. Campbell Madden in 1822, and sva's the mother of our townsman, Dr. r. B. Madden, and Mrs. John H. Jathcart. She was probably the last the Covenanters in -Ibis State., iier remains were interred in the A. ft. P. jhnrch-yard on Tuesday evening. We, n common with the community, ex:end our heartfelt sympathies to the family in their berervement. D. Lauderdale.?We call the attention of the public to the advertisement of Mrs. D. Lauderdale found iu another columu This is perhaps the second oldest establishment in our town, and the firm is well known to the people of Fairfield. Three buyers for the firm have carefully selected an immense stock from the Northern markets, ana now every ueparunum af their stock, including almost every article needed, is complete. A firstclass milliner from the North has been engaged for the season, and will be pleased to see customers when they need anything in that line. The reading public has not been neglccted in the purchosc of this stock, and more first-class reading matter can be secured for fifteen cents at the old stand than any place in the State. See tne books, well bound, sold by them for the above amount. No Sickness in Winxsboko.?It is reported in different sections that Winnsboro is a very unhealthy place; that there is an epidemic of fever in the town. We learn that a gentleman of another county contemplated sending his children to the Mount Zion Institnte, but was deterred by fear of fever. AVe wish to emphatically deny such reports. Winusborois as healthy as any town in the country, ana tnere is no more fear from fever here than any where else. It is trne that there were several cases in the town during the past summer, and some severe ones at that, but the same is equally true of the entire State as far as we can learn. Xo One should besi tate a moment in coming to Winnsboro to reside. There is now no fever in the corporate limits, except one or two who are recovering from relapses in the summer fever. We hope this will be sufficient to set at rest all such damaging rumors. Experience in Advertising.?John "Wanamaker, the great Philadelphia merchant, recently spoke as follow: about advertising: "I never in iny life used sach a thing as a poster, 01 dodger, or handbill. My plan foi fifteen years has been to buy so much space in a newspaper and fill it uj with what I wanted. I would 1101 give an advertisement in a newspapei fhr "i ODD floflcPrS f)l U1 ?W 0 posters. If I wanted to sell cheai jewelry or run a lottery scheme ! might use posters, but I would 110 insult a decent reading public will handbills. The class of people win read such things are poor material t< look to for support in inercantil affairs. I deal directly with the pub lisher, I say to him: 'How long wil vou let me run a column of matte through your paper for $100 or $50( as the case may be. I let him do th figuring, and if I think heis not try in to take more than his share, I giv him the copy. I lay aside the profiil on a particular line of goods for advci tising purposes. The first year I lai aside $3,000; last year "I laid asid and spent $40,000. I have done bettc this year, and shall Licrease that sui as the profits warrant it. I owe m success to the newspapers, and to thei I shall freely give a certain part of m yearly business." A Sound Lejra? Opinion. E.
