AGRICULTURE. Harvesting ?hjk Tubnip Chop.-There ere several ways of harvesting taruips— ■we do uot p-ean rota-bagaa—but we do not think that the old-fashioned way of pulling them up by hand, and topping them with a knife, has been improved on. Au aouve man or boy can get through with a great deal of work in a day—especially as this crop is a' very extensive one, rarely going beyond two acres, and seldom more than an acre, hence the labor at most lasts on only a day or two. A late mpde of harrowing them out may be quicker, but no tur nips thus mangled would sell in market —they would be fit only to feed to such animals as would eat them. It should be borne in mind that of all the roots the turnip is the most impa tient of heat Ii starts to grow on the slightest provocation. In a cellar of not over forty degrees, one may find it growing freely, after an incarceration of but a few weeks. It is growth which is the great enemy of preservation, and it is it eat which excites growth. There is a natural heat in roots when put in a heap—a little heat from one root and a little more from another soon makes a pretty high degree; but in the open field tuis Is carried off by the open air about the pile. Hence, under cover of close protection, this natural heat is not carried off. It accumulates, the loots sprout, and thus give off more heat, and it all soon becomes a regular turnip stew. The turnip, indeed, does not mind a little frost. If they were pnt in small lots in stalls, where the frost could get at them, and covered with straw to prevent rapid thawing, they would keep oetter than if covered with earth, which rather serves, as we have seen,to collect the heat and boil the roots. As to how best to keep turnips, that will ot coarse depend on each person’s conveniences. But if each one keeps in view the fact that heat is more likely to injure them than cold—and at a very low degree at that—he will readily find oat when he look abont what is the best way lor him to preserve them. Tills is abont all there is practically to say about the harvesting and storing of this crop. DOMESTIC. A dhucat* pudding Is made of < ne- qnarter of a pound each of floor, butter and sugar, mixed with one quart of warm milk, and boiled until it is like custaid, then add the yolk of six eggs, well beaten, then the whites, also beat en until they are stiff; Place the pad ding dish In a pan partly filled with water, set it in the oyen, pnt the pad ding in the dish and bake for an hour. The sauce to be beaten with this is made of hall a cap of batter, two caps of sugar, one of wine, the wine to be added last, and after the batter and sugar are well mixed set this in a pan of bot water, to dissolve the batter and to heat gradually. A mixtubb which is excellent for re moving grease spots and stains from carpets and clothing is made of two ounces of ammonia, two onuoes of white Castile soap, one onnoe of glycerine, one onnoe of ether ; cat the soap fine, dissolve in one pint of water over the fire; add two quarts of water. This should be mixed with water in the pro portion of a teacupful to one ordinary- sized pail of water. Mix tnorenghly, and wash soiled garments in it. For removing spots use a sponge or clean flannel olotn, and with a dry doth rub as dry ss possible. Woolen goods may be made to look bright and fresh by being sponged with tuis. Waste in Thuabhxno.—A careful Gemma farmer has tested the waste rub ber, as it is called, w bioli takes in the bundle sideways, so as fb admit of its being rebound. Ae ran the chaff, which was supposed to be iree Irom grain, through a launin^-mill, and obtained 25 bushels of rye. This was twenty-five per cent, of his crop. It proves what 1 have urged before—that in the harry und helter-skelter, and “hurrah boys” connected with thrashing machines, es peciaily the itinerant ones, there is al ways a considerable waste. I spread buckwheat straw to mulch the straw berry beds the buckwheat came up last spring thick enough to seed the ground. An economical manager of a paper mill once told me that they obtained fifteen per cent, of the cost of the rye that was in it. They always thrashed the straw over before using it in the mill, and in this way reduced its cost. The lesson to be learned from these facts is obvi ous. There snould be less hurry about the thrashing, and the h eding of the machinerv should be slower, in order to insure a more perfect seelling of the grain. The owner should see that the cleaning-mill is in good order, and that the sieves are kept elean, otherwise the grain will run over and go out with the chaff, If there were any of the old- time thrashers with flails one of them would be sure to get a steady job at Kiroy Homestead. It did not cost as much to thrash grain in this way in old tunes as it does now with the fast-work ing machines. Calves born as twins, when ot the same sex, breed as regularly and readily as those which come at a single birth, and oiten inherit the fecundity of their parents. When, however, a bull and lieiier calf arrive at one birth the heifers, in a large pt ©portion of cases, never breed. Bulls born along with heifers do not seem to labor under any disad vantage in procreating their species. - Farmers living on good grass land, but which is stony and hard to plow and cultivate, turn tneir attention in rather different directions, particularly to sheep farming. The silo seems partic ularly adapted to milk producers, occu pying light, sandy land that is easily plowed, hut which will not bear grass for more than one or two years without re-1 ceding. A daily cow produces seven times her own hvc weight of milk annually half her weight in cheeee, besides a large amount in butter, but in making this estimate the fact was overlooked that there are many cows of large size that cannot compete with smaller ones. The breed and the manner of feeding influences the yield, while quality Ts sometimes gained at the expense of quantity. Experience uu* year shows that the warm weather below 60 deg. really counts fer nothing in maturing the corn ci op. The same is trne of millet and Hungarian grass and of grape- (among fruits), Borne of these are so tender that a single cold night will apparently retard th ir growth for teveial days, prooably by suddeuly cooling the loose soil, which several days of warm weath er will be required to heal again. Harness should never be kept in the stables which are uot entirely Irje of manure. The ammonia thus produced is rapidlo absorbed by the leather, and the result is said to be the same as if it were saturated with strong lye. It has the effect of rotting the leather and the harness thus exposed, and will conse quently remain sound a comparatively brief time. It is folly to turn under weeds that have gone to seed, for the seeds of most weeds,no matter how deeply baried, will retain their vitality and make rapid growth so soon as they are brought near the surface. Thb State Entomologist of Illinois re ports the stubble of the entire winter wheat region filled with Hewian flies in a dormant condition, and recommends that fire be applied or the infested fields plowed and rolled. Fodder corn should be oat for car ing juot as the tassel blooms. If cat too e&rly or too late the quality is in jured. Thb New York World is authority for the stitement that plantain, if not per mitted to go to seed for two years will di i out. Mow previous to seed time 2 years in snoiessi on Ornaments. — Birds, mice, lizards, cats beaus, etc., are largely patronized by milliners, bat it mast be confessed that these adornments are not always pleasing to tbe eye. Flowers and feathers are by t»x more becoming. This season they are making beautiful velvet flower* most artistically imitated fr-'m nature. Flowers with velvety petals, such as the pansy, the gilli- dower, and the rose, hyacinth and heli otrope, are the moat imitated. Their foliage and the manner in which they are monnted are simply exquisite, Flowers are also greatly use I for orna menting ball dresses, either en quille at the side or foiming garlands all tound the skirt, or else in dusters. Pearl wheat.—This is an excellent form of bieaklast cereal, which is too little known. Take half cap of paarl wheat, two cups of milk and four cups of water, with a scant teaspoonful of salt. Let tbe milk and water boil np in a saucepan on the stove, then stir in the wheat and salt. Put the wheat in the inside kettle of a steam ir to cook, pouring boiling water in the outside kettle around it. Boil two hoars, Let the steamer stand all night on the bauk of the range and in the morning let it heat np slowly, as the fire comes np. The wheat will be ready to serve when breakfast is ready. A table scarf of olive felt was made handsome and tasteful by having on one end a co: ner ot plush. The piece of push ‘ was shaped dike a triangle. Where it joined the felt there were some fancy stitches with bright- colored silks. The other end of the scarf had a straight band of plush put ou with fancy stitches also, and in stead of being an inch or two from the edge of the scarf, there was a space leit of at least 10 inches below the plush. Both ends were finished with a row o! fringe. Handsome covers for sofa pillows and cushions are knit of silk pieces. The real foundation for the stripe—for it is made in stripes— is knit of common oott< n yarn, and is knit with medium- sized needles; knit three rows, then draw through each loop on the next row a bit of the silk. The silk must be cut in narrow strips of equal length and width, The yam must be drawn firmly down to hold the silk in place. Old and even soiled ribbons may be used in this way. Iblt hats.—Felt hats arc greatly worn by many ladies with high crowns, curved brims, and profusely adorned with feathers. Gray in all its shades is most fashionable. One of the favorites of the moment is the small dark felt of unobtrusive form and re sembling in shape that which has been much worn by men in the country. It is adorned at the side with a wing and is lolled round with a twist of gauze. Fidefal cake,—Oie pint of sugar ; oi e end a hull cupfuls of butter ; three pints of fiour; four eggs ; two-wine glasses of milk ; two of wine; two of brandy; one teaspooaful of cream of tariar ; half a teaspoonful of suleratus; fruit and spice to taste. Bake n deep pans, the time depending «u the quant ity of fruit used. Fob Borns.—Strong, fresh, clear lime water mixed with as much linseed oil as it will cut; shake the bottle be- foie applying, wrap the burn in cotton wadding saturated with the lotion ; wet as often as it appears dry, without re moving cotton from barn for nine days, when new skin will have probably formed. Curried egos—Take six eggs, boiled hard ; into a lined saucepan put three ounces of butter or three tablespoonfnIs of butter and three dessert spjousful of carry powder; slice into the mixture the eggs, with a teacup of cream, and let it simmer not boil. French loaf cake.—Two and a half caps sugar, one and a half oup batter, one cup raisins, one oup warm milk, five cups silted flour, three eggs, half a wineglass of wine, a litde nutmeg, a small teaspooutiii of saleratns. Mix butter and sugar to a cream, add part of fionr urd yolks of egg*, then other part of flour and whites of eggs. White sponge carp.—One and a half tumblers of sifted, pulverized sugar, one tnmbler sifted fl >ur, one teaspoon of cream taitar, one-half teaspoon of soda, one-fourth teaspoon of salt; heat these well together and add the whites of ten eggs, beaten to a froth. Btir as quickly and as little as possible. Fla vor with lemon or vanilla. Sauce for beefsteak —Mix two tea- spoonfuls of French mustard with two teaspooutcls of Worcestershire sauce, a tablespoonful of butter and a wine- glass!oi of white wine. Heat thor oughly and serve with beefsteak. Lemon fritters. —Among the nioeat of fruit fritters are those made of lemon. To one cap of milk and one egg allow the juice and palp of oue lemon. These may be served with sance, with the grated peel of half the leinm added to flavor tbe sance. HUMOROUS. A Vermont college has pnt in a’ set of scales on which the boarding pupils sre t > be weighed monthly. The osten sible object is to ascertain the effect of the board famished upon the system of the students, bat the latter have a sneaking snspioion that if they ehow an increase of weight their rations will be ent down, or the hash made less substantial. _ Ah old batcher way out in Missouri, With neuralgia, he suffered like fury. fit Jacobs OIL banished Tbe pain which all vanished— And prevented a coroner’s jury.
