T I k ' n / j M PassEitviNa Salt Mbat.—Maah of the corned oeef and salt perk pat up by fanners becomes tainted or completely spoiled during the summer and fall. The injury is not caused by using too small an amount of salt. As a rule, much more salt is employed than is necessary to preserve the meat. Sometimes it contains impurities that cause the meat to contract a bad flavor. Pure salt should be employed for preset ring met t and dry products. It costs but little more than that which is impure, and it is more satisfactory in all respects. Meat packed in a barrel and covered with brine becomes tainted or spoiled in consequence of small portions of it cr tome of the fat or blood it contains coming to the top of the brine. The air comes in contact with it there, and decomposition takes place. The prc- ducts of the decomposition of animtl substances always have an unpleasant taste and smell, and those in the case of meat in a barrel are communicated to the brine and from thence to the meat. Meat packed in brine should be out in pieces with a very sharp knife. This will leave the edges smooth. After it has been for a few days in the brine the latter should be i oared iff and boiled. The boiling will cause all the impurities to rise to the surface while the blood will be coagulated. These substances should then be skimmed off, and when the brine is cold it can be re turned to the band. If the brine doea not continue pure, the operation of boiling should be repeated. Special pains should be taken 10 keep the meat under the brine at all times. A perfor ated top or false cover;or a frame work, should rest on the meat and be weighted down by a clean stone. If these pre cautions are employed the liability of spoiling will be very slight i. Theory or Cbop Rotation. —It is no w generally admitted that lotatiou of crops is rendered necessary not as formerly supposed because the toil becomes ex hausted of some necessary element, or beoanse on wholesome for that particular plant, owing to ponocous excreta left by the too s, bnt beoanse insects and and diseases accompany the plant which are special to it, the eggs or spores of spores of which sre left in the soil to attack the same crop in the next fol lowing year with hundredfold increase of numbers and power. Piofessor Bes sy, of the Iowa Agricultural College, shows how this is the case with smut, which grows up through all the interior of a wheat plant and Anally develops its spores within the bran casing of the gram, filling it not with flour, but with innumerable black, stinking seeds of the parasite which, when sot free, float out and stick fast to sound grains of wheat and also to particles of the soil, where they lie ready to enter into tbe circulation of the next year’e growth of wheat plants, unless killed by steeping the polluted seed in bine vitriol solut.oa and drying off with lime. As to the polluted soil it is purified from the oon- minatioa only by using it for some other crop on which the smut plant cannot take hold. Youno Tasks.—Young trees planted in the spring should be watched and their form regulated by pinching the the sheets that push too vigorously, and by breaking off the shoots which start where branches are not i e xhx 1 . A little care given to trees while young will make later pruning unnecessary. A gralt should be regarded as a tree plan ted in another tree, instead of m the soil, and its growth, needs to be regula ted by pxoper pinching. Often the growth from a bad will be very vigor ous. If the top cf this be pinched, it will become stocky and throw out side branches. Thebb is a vast difference in the fla vor of eggs. Hens fed on clean, sound grain and kept on a clean grass run give much finer flavored eggs than those that have access to stable and manure heaps and eat all kinds ot filthy fcod. Hens feeding on tho oily species of tish and onions flavor their eggs accordingly the same as cows eating onions or cab- Lage or drinking offensive water impart a bad taste to milk and batter. Thb value of charcoal as a fertiliser is that it absorbs ammonia from the atmos phere, and gives it oat as the loots of plants require. It ako improves the land mecnanicnlly, and from its dark color holds the heat of the sun, making the land v arm and aarly. The remains of old charcoal pits fully attest its fer tilizing qualities for many years there after. Thb length of time that a young hei fer keeps in milk after her first calf is likely to measnre her staying qualities for all after-life. For this reason yonng heifers should have their first calf in the fall. By good care and ensilaged food in winter an abundant flow can be established, which can more easily be kept up the next summer. If heifers calve in the spring they are very liable to go dry early in tie next fall. About hosibbt. — Black stockings still prevail for general use, but there is an effort to revive the fashion of hav ing the hosiery match the dress. Solid colors with embroidery in open designs and in thick work are choteu for handsome silk stockings, fine balbng- gans and for those of lisle thread; the embroidery begins st a point on each aide md widens nntil it almost meets on the instep, and this needlework, as well as the plainest clocks, mast be color of the stocking—not in contrast to it. For the street, black, gray, navy blue, emerald green and dark oardiual—not seal lot—are the colors most used. To match suits there are golden brown stockings with tan color, seal brown, bronze, Judic, mouse and bine gray. For evening toilets are flesh tints, sal mon and pale coral; pearl white stock ings are worn only by biides. Ribbed silit stockings cling to the limb, and are warm enough for ont-of door use in winter; raw silk stockings are also for fctret use. and with fleece linings are comfortable in the coldest weather. Ribbed Balbriggan hose, made of tne fine sea island cotton, are shown in all the dark colors, with white solos that have a fresh and oleanly appearance ; these ore especially liked in black, navy blue, seal brown and cardinal. Cash- mere stockings are soft and warm, and are preferred to those of merino, as they do not shrink; it is pc or economy to bay low priced wool stookings, as they tre not well ehaped.arebt.dly dyed, and do not wear well. The most lux urious st .ckings are mixtures cf camel’s hair and silk, with the toes and heels entirely ot silk. Misses’ stockings of wool or of cotton match the dark coior of the dress or else they are black. French cashmere stockings of dark colors with white cotton feet are chos en for children. Boys wear long ribbed stookings, either navy blue, gray or black. Fine wool stookings for veiy small children are now woven double over the knees. Scnflowbrs.—Sunflower seed is one of tbe beet egg-prod ucmg foods known for poultry, keeping them in a thriving condition and largely increasing the production of eggs. Every poultry raiser who tries it will find that this seed is excellent for glossing tho plum age of fowls, and is almost indispensa ble to those who want to fit their birds for exhibition to the best advan tage. No Lixos, No Hobsb.—Tbe feet and legs of horses require more care than the rest of the body. They most not be allowed to stand in filch and moist ure, and in grooming a horse the feet and legs must be as thoroughly brushed and cleaned as a coat. A little oil cake meal mixed with the foad will give a glossiness. It is much better to feed young pigs often than to surfeit them at one feeding. Variety adds mnoh to the prog ress ot the young animal, and at this season growth is more desirable than fat. ’ Fabxkbb should see to it that the col lars which their hones wear fit them ptoperly. Too often the farmer ii ignor ant on the subject and puts too large or too small collar on his horse. It isn’t that the Shuttle family a particularly hearty supper. “I say, Mrs. S.,” said Job, the other evening, ‘‘this is a somewhat light and decided ly frngal repast.” “I know it, Job; bnt you see I had nothing blit skim milk for the toast—” “Oh, I see. You toasted the skim and poured the milk over it. The idea is worthy of preserva tion in the immortal pages of a cook book,” An cld butcher way out in Missouri, With neuralgia, he suffered like fury. St. Jacobs Oil banished The pain which all vanished— And prevented a coroner's Jury. A cranky oi l man named Blake, Says St, Jacobs Oil “takes the cake,” He gave it one test. The reception room, where the bridal party stood, was one bower of noble palms, tree-ferns, and foliage plants. Group ings of blooming plants were inter spersed among the ornamental leaved ones, and masses of selected cat flowers were so plaood as to giye the loveliest effects. The entire honse, which was a spacious one. was so dressed with tropical growth that it was like one vast conservatory. The oeremony took place in the parlor, the bridal couple standing in a bower of palms. They knelt before a cordon of Japanese ferns and clustered roses. Vines of ferns and the “classic laurel” garlanded the mir rors. The mantles were massed with maidenhair ferns and pink roses, and over one of them was a spider most ar- ristioouy made of the fern called Neph- rolepsis Paleetica. Under this mantle was a bed of white roses, edged with clusters of brilliant crotens. An inm - vation of the usual fashion was the hanging of the bridal beil in the corri dor. Another bell of flowers swung from a coil of roses at the entrance to an adjoining parlor. A slipper of roses was suspended before u mirror. Horns of plenty and bows and arrows dropped from among the towering foliage plants. This decoration was a royal one and on a seals rarely equalled. 1)inner and lunch parties are occu pying the attention of the fionsts a good deal nowadays, Pretty little baskets, as many as there are guests, or a? there are tables, if small tables are set, are osnally called for, and these are filled with the choicest flowers, in fiea and natural arrangements. Snob odd de signs in baskets, as pitchers, three- legged pots, tea-kettles, wheelbarrows, etc., ara preferred by some, while others choose handle baskets, and then decorate them with ribbons. Some times elegant belt bunches for each in- dmdnal are also ordered, and one or more large baskets of flowers for the centre cr ends of the table, and else where. The individual favors are by some wanted to be composed each of a different flower, or else with some par ticular flower or color predominating. Then when their use runs up into doz ens or scores, snch a galaxy of exquisite floral banchee produces an effect that is charming in any apartment. Whebe carpets cannot readily be taken np and shaken, they may be very much brightened and freshened by be ing wiped with a mop wrung from warm water. The water should be frequently changed. If the mopping precedes and follows thorough sweep ing bnt little dost will be raised in the zoom. With the aid of a mop wringer this may be easily done wltnout wet ting even the finger tips, and the mop ping will be less tiresome than sweep ing. A little ox-gall or ammonia in the water will brighten the colors. If a carpet sweeper is used the carpet may be entirely cleansed without raising a particle of dust, though it is well to cover bric-a-brac while the work is go ing on. Marshmallow dbops.—Dissolve one- half pouid of gum arable in one pint of water; strain and add one-half ponnd white sugar, and place over the fire, stirring constantly nntil the syrup is dissolved and of the consistency of honey; then add gradually the whites of four eggs, well beaten. Stir the mixture until it becomes somewhat thin and does not adhere to the fingers. Flavor to taste, and poor all into a pan, slightly dusted with powdered staroh, and when cool divide into small squares. A sebdy individual who applied for alms at a house in town a few days ago said he was a “victim of the Javan eruptions'” The lady of the honse looked at his nose and asked if “Javan” and whiskey were not synonymous terms? Then she tied loose the dog, and as the tramp hujried off, his lan guage sounded like an Irish ernptlon. Thb growing animals intended for beef, require a little exercise daily, to promote muscle and strength of consti tution; when ripe, only so much as to be able to walk to the market. Potatoes. —As soon as potatoes com mence to blossom all cultivation should oease, because if the earth is stirred af ter that time a large number of small tubers will surely be the result A Cline Not Heyond Help. Dr. M. H. Hinsdale, Kenawee, 111., ad vises us of a remarkable case of consump tion. He says: “A neighbor’s wife was at tacked with violent lung disease, and pro nouuced beyond help for quick consumption As a last resort the family was persuaded to try Dr. Wm. Morning Mists And night damps generate malarial disorders and rhenmausm in those obliged to be abroad in them. The farm laborer, the early rising artisan, and the night toiler, find in Hostetler's Stomach Bitters a genial protection against the effects ot exposure to the weather and damp or foetid air, an I alio a pleasant means of connteracting the effects of excessive fatigue of weariness, induced by the lack of a due measnre of “nature’s sweet restorer”—sleep.
