J imnmmim, THE NEWS AND HERALD. WINNSBORO, S. 0. THURSDAY. November 80. t si 18SS. #2ro. s. nEYJroLHS. CUAS. A. DOVGLASS } Editobs. Ex-Senator McDonald denies that there is any truth in the rumor that he is taking an active part in the Speaker- ship contest in the interest of Mr. Carlisle. There are 1,503 more women than ■fiicn in Adams county, Mississippi. This is bad on the women, but men don’t generally fret much over such an announcement. Gregg and Wm. R. Napier, Marion, two charges. 12. George J. Myers, et nl., Marion, 13. James Gaydcn and Hilliard Gay- den, Chester, two charges. The Augusta Chronicle seems to be quite jubilant over the recent conver sion of the Atlant^ Constitution and the New Orleans Times and Demo crat to the cause of Mr. Randall and the Speakership. The New York journals haven’t much faith in the Randall statement that he is sure of a nomination on the first ballot. The more sensible of them don’t believe that he will be nominated on any ballot. We hope not, at any rate. The San Francisco Call thinks that ex-Senator Thurman, as a Democratic Presidential nominee, could carry Ohio, California, Indiana and Nevada. These States, with the Solid South, would elect him, even without the great State of New York. Sergeant Mason, the crank who shot crazy Guitcau, has been pardoned at last by the President. Mason didn’t deserve much sympathy for the cow ardly attempt to murder the uqjbrtu- nate Guiteau, and this exercise of executive clemency is evidence of more humanity than wisdom. The New York Herald is quite ex ercised over the early appointment of a District Attorney for New York City by Governor Cleveland. New York city is steeped in filth and cor ruption and none but the unbending courage and legal ability of one of her profoundest lawyers can check the progress of crime and save the national metropolis from impending ruin. TUB LAW OB ELECTIONS. Messrs. Editors: Having been asked by several members of the Executive Committee of the Prohibition organiza tion in Winnsboro for information upon certain points of law, I desire, as one of the legal advisers of said organi zation, to make public the following conclusions: 1. Any one casting a ballot in the ensuing election must be a qualified elector of the State—that is, he must have such qualification as would en title him to vote if this were a general election in the State. Such voter must have been a resident of the town for sixty days and a citizen of the State for one year. Any one who has been duly tried and convicted of treason, murder, burglary, larceny (either grand or petit), perjury, forgery or any other infamous crime, or of duel ing, is disqualified to vote in said election. 2. Any person willfully or knowing ly taking an oath, either at the time ot registration or at the time of casting his ballot, that he is a qualified elector, when such oath can be proved to be false, such person will be guilty of perjury. The person so voting and committing such perjury may be sent to the State penitentiary for a term of seven years, besides the infliction of the general penalties against such crime. 3. If any person at the ensuing elec tion shall offer or propose to procure a voter by the payment, delivery or promise of money or other article of value, to vote for or against prohibi tion, or “no licence”; or shall offer or propose for the consideration of mon ey or other article of value, paid, de livered or promised, to vote for or THE WORST “ ISM ” TO-DAY IS Rheumatism ‘xsm:s Y> RHEUMATISM /A THE HACK Curod by PERRY DAVIS'S PAW /CILLER, RHEUM A TlSM IE THE EHEES | Cured by PERRY DAVIS'S PAIN KILLER. The Charlotte Observer of the 27th inst. says: “A telegram was received in this city yesterday from Statesville announcing the death in that place of the Rev. W. B, Pressley, of the Asso ciate Reformed church. The telegram gave no particulars but Mr. Pressley’s death must have been unexpected, as none of his friends here knew that he was seriously ill. The deceased is widely known throughout tins section of the country and has many intimate friends in Charlotte, by whom the news oHas death will^c ve^ed^j^ learned that Mr. Pressley’s death was caused bv heart disease. against “no licence” or prohibition, such person so ofl'ering to procure or vote will bo deemed guilty of a mis demeanor, and on conviction tnereof, shall be fined and imprisoned at the discretion of the court. “Other article of value” includes whiskey or liquors of any kind, and any person ofl'ering to procure, by giving whiskey or liquors, any voicr to cast his ballot either for or against the measure, soon to be voted for, will be guilty of this offence. So, also, any person who shall offer or propose, for whiskey or liquor of any kind, delivered or prom ised, to vote for or against this meas ure will be guilty of this crime. These points are not only given for the information of the members of the Executive Committee, but for the benefit of all, both white and colored, who intend to cast their ballots on Friday next. “A word to the wise is sufficient.” J. For The Palmetto Yeoman says: “Those who have reason to know something of the tone and temper of the people of Ohio, and more especially of the Ger man element, have expressed the opin ion that the Democratic victory means something, and that it will prove per manent. It is not an accident or a mistake, as some would have us be lieve, which the people will modify or correct at the next election. The majority desired a change and deter mined to have it, and have made a record for themselves that they do not intend to go back upon. They have rallied to the rescue, and elected the man they wanted, and defeated the one they did not want, and that is about all there is of it.” “Fox’s Book of Martyrs” Contains the history and pictures of hundreds of people who were stoned, burn ed, beaten, pulled to pieces and otherwise tortured on account of their conscientious cohvictions as to belief and duty. They suffered incredible torment and nave come down to the present age as martyrs. It is not now customary to torture people thus, but they are made martyrs by rheumatism until they suffer almost as much as did the he.ioes of the martyr ages. There was no relief for the old-time martyrs, but there is happy relief for those who suffer from rheumatism. Cashier Charles F. Morrill, dtutdils of “this’ painful disease, but he has been cured. He writes: “I was a martyr to rheumatism, and, although I tried many other remedies; I found nothing that relieved me like Perry Davis’s Pain Killer ” Other rheumatic martyrs may wisely take the hint. * Goughs, Colds Diseases. and Lung We have just received a fresh stock of Prints, Cretons, bleached and unbleached Domestics and Sheetings, Canton Flannels, &c., which arb being marked low. Judge Bond being ab sent, and no likelihood of an immedi ate trial of the election cases. Very few spectators were in the court-room at the formal opening of the term, the little audience being made up princi pally of Greenback jurors, Republican witnesses, and the mysterious absence of Democrats, as jurors, witnesses or spectators was the theme of comment. Among the petit jurors selected to sit in judgment on the frauds (?) of the Democrats are John Agncw, of Co lumbia, and W. W. Russell, of Ander son, whose exalted position in the defunct National Greenback Labor Reform Party, is assurance enough that the prisoners will be accorded a speedy trial by an impartial jury”. The following list of cases is furnish ed by Mr. Mellon as embracing all which he at present expect to call up at this term. The order in wiiich they would he called up the district-attorney was unable to say: 1. James P. Wolfe, Charleston, one charge, 2. John A. Mitchell, Charleston, three charges. 8. Frcdk.
