During the fiscal year ending June 80,1883, there was collected under the internal reveille taxes the sum of $144,663,866. The law of March, 1883, not only abolished many of the duties, reducing the number of articles taxed, but also materially altered some of the rates of duty that were not repealed. During the year ending June 30, 1884, the sources of revenue will be distilled and fermented liquors, tobacco and i bank circulation. In spite of these changes the sum collected, provided no further alterations be made, prom ises to be $130,000,000, o.- only $14,- {&0,000 less than was collected in 1883. It is reported that Postmaster Gen eral Gresham will recommend that the limit of single letter postage be fixed at an ounce instead of half an ounce, as at present. He thinks that while this will not add materially to the weight of letters to be carried through the fnaih?, it will do away w ith much dis satisfaction arising from the uncertain ty as to weight of letters mailed. Nine letters out of ten are under the half ounce, while of the remaining ones the rafger proportion are hut an insignifi- cftV fraction above it, which subjects them to double postage, simply be cause the writers could not accurately fix the weight. If the ounce limit were adopted these uncertainties would be done away with and the govern ment would not sullcr thereby. He charges the Democrats with inciting blood shed—indeed, witli actually murdering negroes—in order to carry the elec tion The address is so violent in its language, so sweeping in its charges, that impartial people are not likely to attach great importance to it. The New York Herald thinks that Senator Malione will find it extremely hard to induce the American people to accept his statements. On the other hand, General Barbour and other prominent Democrats show up in their true light all Mahone’s falsehoods, and place the responsibility for the disturbances dur- ifigithe campaign where it properly belongs—upon the Readjustee leaders. The Danville riot, which resulted so seriously, is shown to have been caused by the incendiary speeches of llead- justcr orators and the folly of negroes who followed their teachings. The following resolutions were adopted: 1. That we appreciate the benefits of a good city government. 2. That we recognize the fact that the interests of the white and colored races arc inseparable. 3. That for the welfare and advancement of our native city it is necessary that tiiere should be unity, peace and concord be tween the two races. 4. That to insure good government we must put aside all party and personal pre judices and be united for the right man in tqe right place. The meeting further adopted resolu tions endorsing the administration of Mayor Courtenav. This action of the meeting as embodied in the resolutions is highly commendable.
