In 1815 he established a private hospi tal for the treatment of diseases of women, which he supported for four years at his own expense. In 1S5!) he removed to New York where through his efforts a woman’s hospital was es tablished under his charge. While in Montgomery his attention was direct ed to the use of metallic sutures in surgery, and' to his successful intro duction of this improvement lie owed his subsequent success and fame. He is principally known to the general public by his career in Paris, where, under the patronage of the Emperor Napoleon III., lie organized the Anglo- American Ambulance Corps, and bv his largo practice achieved a consider able fortune. After the fall of Napoleon he returned to New York, where, with tlic exception of occasional visits to Europe and visits to South Carolina, lie remained in tiie successful practice of his profession up to the time of his death. nuinhered the conscript fathers of otir town. They would have > you believe that this “debt” is an enor mous sum, which all the wealth of Indies could not payoff, when in fact the town does not owe hut the small sum of $650 anmiidly, with the inter-1 est thereon. True this debt in the, aggregate amounts to $2,600, buf otdy! one-fourth of this has to be provided j for at a time, as the company from whom the engine was bought took four notes. Now it appears tliis savors very much of the quarrel of the pen dulum with the clock. There is also a note of $1,000, given by some pri vate citizens to the Bank of Chester, to secure a loan that was necessary to procure the requisite funds for cfon- structing the new road. But this must bo paid, says those who have made a mountain out of a mole-hill. Yes, we say so too; but why? Is rot the stopping of whiskey also a stronger moral debt owed by each and every individual of tliis town to each other? Thus, sirs, you see that after all this debt is quty a chimera which vanishes on being ap- ; preached. What is this for Mown the ; size of ours?
