This^, speaks w^ll for the taxpayers of FairfioM county'. —All parties who bought guanos from us must settle on or before the 1st of November, or .they wii lose the cotton option and will have to pay the face of their notes in money. ' It. J. McCarley & Co. i • f ■- i U 3 Oct 27-tjf* : —Magnificent autumn weather this week, and the farmers are rushing their cotton to the market. A few more weeks and that crop will be picked, ginned, packed and sold—then for another year. ,/ —Messrs. It. J. McCarley & Co. are prepared to buy or sell Future Con- Cuo^g in the State.—The Columbia correspondent.of the News and Cou rier, speaking of the prompt collection of taxes by the county treasurers throughout the State, says of the crop prospects: I am at a loss to reconcile these facts and the easy collection of taxes with the noto rious shortness of the crops, except by the supposition that the people in this section are becoming so prosperous that (they are not much affected by the failure of crops, and not at all frightened by it. I do not think that hereabouts or elsewhere in the State the loss in the cotton yipld will be nearly as great as was anticipated. When farmers are “blue” they are very blue in deed, and naturally over-estimate the losses which they will sustain. Riahland county was estimated on September 1st to have in prospect but two-thirds of a cfap of cotton. That the yield will be at least three-fourths of an average crop is now generally ad mitted. I hear that one of our largest planters will make five-sixths of a crop. Then the loss of cotton has been in some measure coanterbalanced by better prices for what has been marketed. The oat acreage is going to be very large this sea son, and I think that, from the presert planting throughout the State, South Caro- URSUANT TO THE ORDER OF shot in the hands and in the bosom of j Sale made in the case of Sarah B. The case was up before Judge Kershaw at Ab- heville C. H. on an appeal from a trial justice's court. The case was com menced tinder the section of the stat utes entitled, “For ^the protection of laborers’’. The defendant was Toulid guilty. The facts are these;; The con tract was made by the defendant fpr the services of her son and not for her own services. The judge held that the defendant could not be punished under the law, as she had not contracted for her own personal services. The “oat idea” only truly entered the minds of oiif people two or three years.ago. The drought of ’81 stimulated it, aud hut for last winter’s rains the acreage would have been augmented considerably. As it was, there was a crop nearly as large as that of ’82, and with the ^present planting the crop is permanently , fixed as a stand ard, and most impertant one, in South Car olina. We Would probably be safe in say ing that at least a half crop of cotton will be made in Fairfield county dur ing the present year. The corn is reported much better on an average than the cotton, and there w.ill doubt less be iria^e between two-ihirds and three-fourths of a crop.
