Presbyterian church in <this place has been adorned with a beauti ful and costly chandelier of eighteen lights. It was purchased by funds in the hands of the ladies of that church; | ihe proceeds realized from the of the Ladies’ Benevolent Society. The chandelier cost something over one hundred dollars, and is quite an orna ment to the church rendering the inside of the building when lighted very attractive. To the indefatigable energy of the same organization is due the handsome iron railing that now en closes the burial ground contiguous to that church. The pastor ■awl congre gation arO to be congratulated upon these evidences of healthy progress. THE ASSOCIATE REEORMED STNOTt. Chester, October 25.—This ecclesi astical body convened in the Associate Itcformed church of Chester to-day at 11 a. m. Its name, “Associate Re formed”, arises from a union formally consummated between the Associate Presbyterians and the Reformed Pres byterians of America in Philadelphia, Pa., November 1, 1782. The founders of this church originally seceded from the “Established Church” of Scotland because of certain corruptions toler ated in the parent church, and also be cause of certain questions touching the relation between church and State, the power of civil government, etc., j regarded by the leaders of the seces sion movement bs inconsistent with the genius of true Presbyterianism. This gave rise to the title &eceder«, commonly applied to this body of Christians, a name that is most honor able and suggestive when historically understood, but one inopplicfible to the church in its present existence. The Synod of the South was organ ized at Ebenezcr, an old brick church yet standing upon the banks of Little River, in Fairfield county, S. C. The body then consisted of not over eight ministers. It numbers as present over eighty ministers, with 110 congrega tions iu-as many as twelve States, ex tending from Ohio to Texas, eight Presbyteries and a membership of) about 7.000. The sessions were opened with* 'a And parties will find it to their advantage to call and examine both Goods and Prices * » . f •• Before purchasing. All of which will be SOLD AT THE LOWEST PRICE, AT The Amateurs Alive Again.—We are gratified to learn that enterprising young tallies awl gentlemen in towm are taking steps and preparations ore now in progress to give a theatrical performance in the Thespian Hall at an early day. The object is to raise money to assist in furnishing the South Carolina room at Mount Vernon. The women of the State have the matter in hand and it is assurance sufficient that it will soon be placed in a condition that w : ll reflect credit upon the origi nators v «md executors of the scheme. „ It is understood that the play selected for the performance will be a tragedy. Heretofore nothing more than ordinary cofoedies have been attempted in Winusboro, and it is earnestly hoped that the new departure will be a suc cess, pecuniarily and every other way. Hard to Swallow.—The Green ville Neios says: “W. R. Garrett, of Chick Springs township, who resides near White Horse, about six miles from this city, exhibited on the streets a vegetable curiosity in the shape of a stalk of cotton, which he found grow ing in his corn field. On the stalk were four shoots or branches about eighteen inches apart—the first one being about two feet from the ground. Two of these shoots grew from either side of the stalk and attained a length of about two feet. On the end of each shoot a fully developed and good sized car of corn has grown. The main stalk bore only the tassel and was des titute af anything resembling an ear of corn. It was a singular freak of nature, and attracted much attention. It will be on exhibition at the fair.” ATTENTION i 1 f IS CALLED to FRESH ADDITIONS TO MY The Colored Baptist Association. —The Colored Baptist Association for this district was in session in this place during last week. It began on Thursday and its deliberations con tinued uninterrupted until Sunday last, when the Association adjourned sine die. There were one hundred and thirty delegates in attendance, representing the territorial jurisdic tion embracing the counties of Fair- field, Richland, Chester and Kecshavv. fhe meeting was full, interesting and enjoyable throughout, and the col ored people, not only of that religious persuasion, but of-all denominations, enjoyed the deliberations of the Asso ciation. The exercises of the week were concluded with services in the Court House on Sunday morning, and a large portion of the delegates took the afternoon trains for their homes. Among the Justices.—The case of the State against Sterling Dixon, ebarg' cd with assault and battery,-was tried before Justice Neil on last Saturday. Messrs. McDonald Sc Douglass ap peared for the defence. The defend ant wasloun^ not guilty. On the same day the case of the merits daily. FOR MALE. The Doctor selected as the foundation of his discourse the-. ^ ~ ^ 11th verse-of the 12th chapter of the yy Hj io. books of Revelations: “And they overcame him by the blood of the Lamb and by the word of their testi mony’'. The sermon w'as one of the Doctor’s best efforts, and was deliv ered in his usual clear, logical and forcible manner. In the absence of the last Moderator, the Synod was constituted by the Rev. James Boyce, D. D., the senior mem ber of Synod. On calling the roll, delegates answered to their names from Virginia, North Carolina, South Carolina, Georgia, Alabama, Missis sippi, Tennessee, Kentucky, Arkansas and Texas. Dr. Boyce was chosen Moderator. Though in feeble health, he performs the duties of his office with promptness and ability. The most of the day was consumed in taking up the unfinished business of last Synod, and in ascertaining from the pastors whether or not the various orders had been complied with, etc. Alter the opening of the afternoon session, the Moderator announced the various committees. Papers were then- called for, Vead and referred to the different committees. From the dif ferent Presbyterial reports and the reports of the treasurers of Erskinc College, foreign missions, etc., it ap pears that the financial condition of the Synod is better than it has been in years; that, while nearly every portion has been visited by a severe and pro tracted drought, the people have gen erally abounded in the grace of liber ality and have responded most cordi ally to the various calls of the Church. At five o’clock, p. m., the Synod adjourned until 9.30 a. m. to-morrow. -, Friday, October 26. Synod met at the usual time. Most of the morning was occupied with routine business. The Rev. William Johnson, the delegate from the United Presbyterian Church, mode his appear ance and was formally presented to the Svnod. it was made the order of the day to hear his address at four o’clock this afternoon. The board of foreign missions pre sented a lepghty report, showing the work in Tampico, Mexico, to be in a most encouraging condition, and ask ing for an increased appropriation of $900 for the more effective prosecution of the work. The committee appointed at the last meeting of Synod to prepare a plan for an enlargement of the cause of theological instruction and also to in crease the number of professors, sub mitted a carefully prepared report. They recommend that an endowment of at least $30,000 be raised at once, s6 as to place the institntion on a so-id and independent basis. This report will be acted upon at ten o’clock Sat urday morning. A half hour was spent in devotional exercises, conducted by the Moderator, when Synod took a recess until three o’clock this afternoon.
