AGRICULTURE. DOMESTIC. HUMOROUS. Remove the Old Canes.—If it has not already been done, the bearing canes of strawberries and blackberries conld not be removed, It is known that the now worthless old wood draws for its vitality upon the general store of the root, and whatever it abstracts is so mnoh^taken from the young cane s that will bear fruit next year. If they (the old canes) are removed it will give the young ones a better chance, and give bettar opportunities for working the ground, uestroying weeds and grass, and keeping the ground In proper order. A sharp, long-handled hook is the proper thing to use in cutting out the old canes, and if this is attended to now while they are still green they cut comparatively easy. If the hands are protected by a pair of strong buckskin gloves the work may be done more easily now than at any other time, and there is as much leisure to do it now as will be likely to be found any time. The new wood may lie cut back some if it is very tall, and if stakes or supports are needed they may be put in place. The right time to set out new plantations of these fruits is in late Gotooer after the leaves have all fallen. This month is a good time to set out a strawberry bed, and if there are none on your premises take advan tage of the season and set out some. For foundered horses, four ounces of alum dissolved in warm waler and giv en as a drench, then followed in two hours with a quart of linseed oil, is my best remedy. Don't squander your money buying high-toned, far-fetched spavin remedies, when for a few cents you can put up a bottle of corrosive lin iment that will remove any callous puffs, etc., that can be removed by any reme dy. It is made thus: Spirits of tur pentine, one pint; add two ounces of gum camphor, and one-half an ounce of corrosive sublimate; shake well, and iu a few hours it is ready for use. It wnl cure hog spavin, remove callouses; cure thrush, and 1 believe it will cure any ecru if faithfully applied. It is one of the best kuown remedies for foot-rot iu sheep. For sweeny, leave out the cor rosive sublimate and use only the tur pentine and camphor. Jf'or strain of the stiiiu.use the same quantity of turpen tine and camphor, as above, and add one-half ounce of tincture of cupsium, well rubbed in. The first few years of the life of an apple tree is the most important period for exercising o .re and diligence iu re gard to pruning. A well-known pomo- iogist once said that he could grow a model apple orchard and never prune with any other implement than a jack knife. He would begiu with the tree as soon as it was taken from the uur-ie- ry, and would at once begiu to form the future top. Then is the time to avoid crotches, which will be almost sure to split in after years, auu to begiu at the top at the right height auu iu the proper shape. One is apt to begin at the top too low'; it looks higher on a small tree than on a large one. It may not be desirable for the general grower to undertake to do all his pruning by means of a knife, but he can always use it to good advantage. Excessive prun ing of large trees should always be avoided. plants are eitlu r grown iu hot beds or in bods on a rich piece of ground specially prepared. One tablespoonful of seed is sown on a square rod. When the plants are as large as a silver dollar they are transplanted into the field, which is well plowed and manured, and laid out iu squares as for c >rn. three feet apart, which gives -1 840 plants jier acre. The cultivation differed in no way from that of any other hoed crop. It is invested with a large green worm.thesamcas the so-called tomato worm, and needs to be freed from this pest by picking. As soon as the blossom begins to shoot forth, the plant is topped uowu to niiont twelve leaves, and suckers are removed as they appear. When the leaves are mature, tUe plants are cut near the roots and strung upon laths to dry, in a curing house. The (iermauiown leiegrupn says: “Reach leaves are poisonous, and often prove fatal when eaten by animals. The leaves are said to contain prussic acid, and a number of instances are recorded of sheep being killed by eating them. Instances have occurred in which cattle and sheep have been poisoned by eating the leaves of the wild clnrry. It has been said that the leaves of the cultiva ted cherry are free from poison until they have wilted, but cases have been kuown in which the green leaves have proved poisonous and fatal to animals.” Watermelon Sikui*. — Mr. S. G. O'Neal has tried the experiment of con verting his large watermelon crop, for which there were no remunerative pri ces, into sirup. He has succeeded fine ly, and believes that there is no reason why an acre of melons should not yield as much sirup as a similar area in sugar cane, while tne former does not tax the land near so heavily as the latter. The sirup has a delightful p^aoh-proserve sirup flavor. Blauters in difiero'it sec tions of tiieState intend trying this same ex enment. Cats kill and destroy far more birds and eggs than they do mice, and no one needs u> be told how groat are tne dam ages inflicted by vagrant dogs. If one man is compelled to confine his mis chievous jugs there is no good reason why his neighbor should not be compel- AJ 1, : _ —2 1- t e t • AOT4 VU \XH1UUV iilB UilBUiiltti'WUrfclllg 2iUl~ mals, be they horses, cattle, sheep or only cats and dogs. The water that flows over a plowed field washes off the most so uble jxntious of the soil, and deposits them in the bottom of the ditches. When it perco lates through the soil to an underdrain the loss is reduced to the smallest po- - aible amount. There is some loss in underdraining water: but this is in greater part prevented by having a growing crop on the ground all the time. Now yon miss the ice-house. The opportunity afforded last winter was not improved. At small cost almost every farmer cau save a supply of the crystal blocks stored away which will be a great luxury during the heated term. It is estimated that the grain product this season of California, Oregon and Washington territory will be greater than ever before, amounting to one hundred and seventeen million bushels. Disinfectants —Coffee pounded in a mortar and roasted on an iron piate; sugar burned on hot coals, and vinegar boiled with myrrh and sprinkled on the floor and furniture of a sick room are excellent deodorizers. Heart A ilments Induced by Smoking. —Ont of eighty-one great smokers ex amined in France by a medical expert, twenty-three are reported as exhibiting an intermittent pnlse, independent of any cardiac lesion, and this intermitten- cy disappeared on the smoking habit being abandoned. The effects of smok ing on children from 9 to 16 years of age show not only paljvtation and intermit tent pulse, bnt cbloro antenna. The results of observation in this line in re spect to women smokers—some forty to fifty cases—show that most of them snffered from disturbances of menstrna- tion and digestion, and about one-fifth of the number presented very marked intermittency of the pnlse, without any lesion of the heart. These latter defied all methods of treatment, however skill ful, frequent or prolonged, the difficulty yielding only with the suppression of the habit. Gone Never to Keturn. Gakd NtK. We. —Mr. Daniel Gray, a prominent lumber merchant writes that his wife hud severe rheumatic paiDs;8o se vere as to render her unable to sleep. From the first application of the famous Germau Remedy, 8t. Jacob’s Oil, she ex perienced unspeakable relief, and in two hours the pain had eutiiel; gone. Artist Cooks are exjienmenting with American flavors, and are rewarded by piquant results in very odd combina- thm. It is well known by old Virginia gourmands that gumbo souj>, that rich est of southern dishes, is not complete unless sassafras leaves are added to the compound, and they are user! as a sea soning with roast raccoon. The flavor of black birch is very agreeable in choc olate, with which it harmonizes more finely than vanilla; yon can try it by dropping a checkerberry lozenge or two for sweetening in your cup of cocoa in the morning. The mild muscadine, the frost grape and native Catawba yield the linust, highest bouquet to all sorts of confectioneries, creams, jellies, san- ces. The sharp cider jelly, sold in small firkins, is finer to serve with roasts. Irom turkey to venison, than either cranberry or the traditional Eng lish currant jelly. Nervous and Neuraluio Headache. —bromide of potassium is pronounced by highly medical authority a valuable remedy for this ailment—many a head ache, it is declared, being kept iu cheek and the seizure cut short if a full dose is taken as soon as discomfort is felt, particularly if the patient can go to bed and obtain sleep. Again, if compelled to be aliout, twenty grains taken in a little sal volatile and water will lull the nervous centres, and so calm the cere bral circulation; or ten-grain doses, with carbonate of ammonia in efferves cence with citric acid, will sometimes have an equally good effect. No ill effects are ever known to ensue from the bromide, even when administered in considerable doses. X* (Bllllll I . ” i rzii i\nri*r• It is entirely ddlt'ienl tVoui all others. Bechamel Sauce.—Professor Blot’s recipe for this is considered excellent. Mix well together two ounces of butter and one tablespoon!'ll ol flour, then add a pint of milk; set the saucepan over the tire and stir continually; when turning rather thick, ±-Amove; beat the yolk of an egg to a light cream with a teaspoouful of water, turn it into the auee, mix well again, add salt and pep- jjer to taste, and it is ready for use. A number of years ago I was troubled with my kidneys. The idea of a druggist, however, resorting to the use of a “patent medicine” was a little humili ating, but when 1 came to consider how many people had been beuetitted by the use of Hunt’s Remedy, I unhesitatingly began using it; aud after having fully tested its virtues 1 r an say, as many of my customers have said to mo, “ft Is the beat medicine for kidney and liver complaint ever com pounded.
