. ' - XeiA-vv.. ■' V- AGRICULTURE. Turning Stock Out to Grass.—It is sometimes a question of considerable importance when to turn stock from their winter quarters to summer pas tures. If a held is to be stocked to nearly its full capacity,it is best to keep the cattle in the barnyard until the pasture has become nicely started, or three or four inches tail. Something depends, however, upon the kinds of grasses in the pasture. Some kinds of grasses become tough if allowed to grow to much size, and are not rolishtd by stock. This is especially true of June grass, or blue grass, which when young and tender makes the best of pasture. Clover or timothy on moderately rich land will be eaten readily by stock if left to reach considerable size; either will be preferred when growing on moderately fertile land to that which is very rich. It is advisable, when not too inoonveniont, to give milch cows,as well as other cattle, the pasture both day and night. I like to have two pas ture fields, and to give the cattle a change from one to the other occasion ally, This gives the grass an opportun ity to ‘‘freshen up” in the one while un occupied, and at the same time makes the stock more oontemud. Four or live days after turning stock out to grass, it is a good plan to give them daily a ra tion of grain.which will usually prevent derangement of the system consequent on the sudden change from dry food to succulent grass. There is no date which can be fixed as the beet time to turn stock to grass. The weather and the amount of pasture Ur the animals must determine this. Thk Toulouse goose is one of the most popular, on account of its size, early development good laying quality and tender and well-flavored flesh. In colo', the breast and abdomen are light gray, the back dark gray; the neck dar ker gray than the back; wings and ab domen shading oil to white; under part of the body white. The skin of the breast, and abdomen show a tendency to hang down in folds, nearly touching the ground. This detracts much from the market value of the breed, as it gives the impression of greater age than the goose may actually possess. The hill of the Toulouse goose is pale flesh- color, and the legs and feet deep or ange, inclined to red. It is easily fat tened, sometimes reaching the enor mous weight of fllty or sixty pounds to the pair, while its cross with the com mon goose is thought to be even larger than the pure breed. For breeding, only two or three geese should go with the Toulouse gander. The geese pro duce thirteen to fifteen eggs each. After the goose has sat a day or two thirteen eggs should be given. '1 he period of incubation is from tweuiy-eight to thirty days. A writer says: “There is scarcely a farmer who does not plant a larger acreage than he can profitably attend to and the result is that three acres hard ly cron out so much us one ought to, and we hear of twenty, thirty or forty bushels of corn to the acre where it ought to be sixty to one hundred bush els, and rf the time spent on twenty acres was spent on ten, and the manure dribbled on twcufy were judiciously used on the ten, there would be ten acres to put In grass, set to enriching it self and at the same thne making splen did pasturage for a half score of year lings, besides realizing fully as much corn as in the old-style way, and in stead of plowing the corn only two or three times we had better plow it six times. Now I know thereof i speak. During a drongbt several years ago a certain former bade his boys plow the corn seven times that snmnier.and while the neighbors’ cribs were verv lean that year his crop was the largest ever gath ered on that farm." Experiments at the Canadian Model Faim show that a cow previous to calv ing should be confined to a straw and hay diet and completely dried off; that the milking periods should be only once a day for awhile.then once in two days, aud prolonging the intervals as long as it is safe to do so. Hawks have a partiality for a tall pole, Horn whence they cau survey the field before seizing their prey. The knowledge of this propensity of tbe hawk by the fanners sometimes induces the latter to erect polec at certain loca tions, at the top of which are fastened steel spring traps, which close when the hawks alight on them. A orbit many fields, especially those long and narrow, are always plowed the same way. Simply changing the direc tion cf working will often'make a great increase in productiveness. The fur row cut across the old lines of furrows is not stopped by tbe same stones, while new soil is opened to the growth of plant roots. When rye is turned under as green manure,it should be plowed just before the stem and head appear. At this time theleavea are full of sap and the whole mass is decomposed very rapidly. It the field is left until the straw forms, decomposition depends on the weather, and a very dry Summer may leave some unchanged till Fall. A potato that has been chilled is to tally unfit for seed. Farmers are often at a loss to know why their potatoes do not sprout; when the solution of the mystery would he found in the fact that they were chilled before plan ting. In fruit growing, remember that fruits are like grain and vegetable crops in this, they must have manure to keep np fertility. Unlike vegetables and grain, however, their feeding roots are mostly at the surface. It is best, therefore, annually to top-dress fruit trees. Samvel Miller, of Missouri, to the end of increasing the crops of potatoes when seed is new send high-priced,plants the tubers in boxes early by a stove and starts the sprouts, and when three inches in height they are removed and set oat. and the operation continued several times. DOMESTIC. To Wash Shetland Shawls.—Make np a thin lather of boiled soap and wa ter: plunge the shawl in this, and gent ly strip it through the hand. It most never be rnbbcd or wrnng. When clean, rinse through water without any soap, hang it np for about a minute, shake it gently by each side alternately, pin it out on a sheet exactly square, and if tbe shawl be of a fine texture it should be slightly sewed down the sheet by the top of the fringe to prevent its running np; then go over the whole fringe, drawing each thread separate and laying it straight ont. If these directions are carefully attended to, the shawls may be washed many times, and' each time appear as well as when new. They should never be put iuto tbe hands of any bnt those those who are accus tomed to wash lace. Uncle Saul’s Navy. In a commuoic&tion published in the Army and Navy Journal, Commander J. B. Coghlan,ll. t*. N.,states that the con sultations of eminent naval and other sur geons, respecting his rheumatic attack, failed to afford him the slightest relief. By advice of Dr. Hoyle he used St. Jacob’s Oil, which wrought a complete and, as he says, wonderful cure. John Carr Moody, Esq., lawyer at Vallejo, Cal., was likewise cured of a severe joint trouble. Charlotte Russe—Soak one onnee of gelatine in a pint of milk for half an hour, then dissolve the same by placing the vessel containing the gelatine and milk in a hot pot of wateY, that it may not burn while heating. Next, beat the yelk of one egg and ponr it into the milk and gelatine when hot; atrain it into a bowl aqd while cooling it beat it thoroughly. Next, flavor one quart of cream with one large teaapoonful of extract of yamlla and sugar to suit the taste, beat tbe white of the egg to a stiff'froth; stir the cream and egg to gether and beat to a light froth with an egg beater. Next, pour the two mix tures together and whip them thorough ly; pour Into moulds nued with lady- finger. Do not pour into molds until the mixture is stiff enough to prevent the cakes from rising to the suriace. Our llest Families. I have been troubled for over six years with a severe kidney complaint, also a weakness of the urinary organs, with its attendant troubles. My water needed constant atten tion, some days as many as twenty times, with severe pains in the bladder, as well as in the back and loins. At times 1 passed a limited quantity ofurine, highly colored with unnatural heat and sediment; frequently evacuations would be very painful. I con cluded that I must do something for it. fear- 'ing that more serious trouble would follow. I went to the druggist aud was recommended to use Hunt’s Remedy, as It had been used with wonderful successin several severe cases of dropsy and kidney and bladder affections here in Bangor. I concluded to try it, and before I had used one bottle found it was helping me beyond my expectations. My water became more natural, less color and sediment, the pains in back and that heavy feeling gone, witha general toning up of the system; and 1 continued to use it until 1 used six bottles, and it has completely cured me. Others of my family have used Hunt’s Remedy with equally as good success, and we do not hesitate to recommend it far and near, believing it a duty as well as a pleasure to recommend so good a medicine as Hunt’s Remedy. You are at liberty to give my test imony to i he public. D. T. Hododkn. Osslngtou, Me., May 19,188a. I indorse the above statement. A. Al. Robinson, Jr., Apothecary, Bangor, Me. Chowder made of haddock may be excelled if proper care is taken in the making. The fish must tie in good condition, fresh aud firm; clean it and cut it in small square pieces; place in the bottom of the kettle in which the chowder is to be made some thin slices of salt pork; fry these until they are brown, then put a layer of onions which have been sliced very thin and browned in a saucepan with a little butter; then pnt a layer of sliced potatoes, then a layer of the fish, and so on until the material is exhausted. Cover with wa ter and let it boil for half an hour, then add a pint cf cracker-crumbs aud a pint of milk; let this come to a boil. Serve hot. Cooling Water Without Ice.—Ice is not to t>e procured in Mexico, and ice water would be a most injurious beverage there, even if it could be had. Yet tbe water used for drinking pur poses has to be cooled in order to make it palatable, and tbe way it is done is to cover the receptacle with one or two thicknesses of blanket, salat ate the covering and hung the whole in a draughty place away from the sun. The result is oooi water. Skinny Men. “Philip.’’ said the President, “it exasperates me exceedingly that this wind, blowing along the river, shonld have put a stop to our pisoatorial ad venturers.
