General Toombs says the Bible has an acconnt of dudes. Absalom, he says, was a dude. This country un questionably beats Palistine on the new article of trade. The Yorkville Enquirer says: “We must conclude iliat tiie Railroad Com mission has proved itself a most egregious failure in attempting to se cure ‘just and reasonable rates’ for the people.” Judge Uoadly, in a recent speech in Cleveland, Ohio, said! “I stand on the impregnable platform that the abuse and not the use of alcholiolic liquor is to be taken in baud. I be lieve in the efficacy of moral suasion, but not in forced prohibition.” The marriage statistics of Switzer land are very interesting. It appears that the proportion of marriages is very much below the average number throughout Europe. The official statistics show the average ago of mar riage for males in that country is 31 and for females 27. Editors: Knowing that you feel a deep interest in education, and that you do pot regard with apatjiy anything that may advance its cause, no matter how humble the source from which it is derived, we make bold to ask the use of your columns for the publication of a few thoughts on a branch of this important subject that has been hitherto entirely neglected, feeling sure that our request will meet with a kind reception. The State, within the Inst few years, by greet exertion and the wisdom of o r logislatcr , has again called in o existence those two institutions that have dene her such honor by training the brilliant intellects that have gone forth in the darkest hour of her udver- ity to sustain the truth and justice of her cause. True, much has been done, but something remains to be done. The South Carolina University and the Citadel are again doing the work in tended by their founders; men are every day receiving instructions within their waiis by professors paid by the State. In the University tuition is free to all; in the Citadel only enougli is charged to save the Slate harmless from those who are able to pay for iheniselvcs; and in addition to this two cadets are cho-en hr a compeli- dvo examination from each county whose expenses are borne by die State. These cadets mn-t bo unable to pay tiiehi-elves, or have no one who can do tor them. This is what the Slate h is accomplished for education in ad dition to the free schools. Bill is this all that should be done in the promo lion of this important subject? We say no. Why should not a universiu be esiablidicd for women as well as for men? Is it because they are of less importance and therefore no higher culture than may be oblained through the medium of some obscure coliege, or is ii because of that idea which has are safe in their biles aid the j been so long prevalent that :hoy art lpendent republican g Wherefore, then, should there not lie a university for teinaks as well as males at the expense of the State?
