The State Normal Institute at Co lumbia closed on Thursday last with appropriate ceremonies. Ringing ad dresses were made by Governor Thomp son, Colonel Coward and president Shepherd. The Institute, upon a gen eral survey of the work and progress of the session, was as successful, in teresting and instructive as any ever held in tins State. It is true the at tendance of teachers was not qnile so large as Mst year, but the enthusiasm of those who attended, together with the general interest of the public, should bo a source of gratification and pride not only to the professors having it in charge, but to the friends of cducaation throughnt the State. The Winnsboro News and Herald, of * \ List week snys: “The Orangeburg Times and Democrat is full of 1'aiula II these clays ” Our esteemed cotemporary will be sur prised to learn, no doubt, that we have no apologies to make for being what it is ideased to term “full of Randall.” Mr. Randall, as we have said before, is not our special favorite for the Speakership, any more than any other Democrat, hut, as a true and tried Democrat, we do think he is entitled to fair play at the hands of the organs of his party, and so far as this journal is concerned he shall have it.— Oran'jeburg Times and Democrat. We didn’t expect any apologies from our contemporary for its advocacy ol Mr. Randall for the Speakership, nor Iiavc wo ever thought its position one lo he ashamed of. On the contVsry we admire the firmness.and courage it must have to battle so fiercely and boldly against the current of political sentiment in South Carolina. That the people of the State arc opposed to the election of Mr. Randall, and that the majority of our delegates in the House are in accord with that senti ment, there can be little or no room to question. But, with it all, who denies to Mr. Randall all “fair play”? Pray what docs our friend and contempora ry esteem “fair play”? If it is to be again and again elected Speaker of the House of Representatives, whether the political tenets of the party of his ad herence are in sympathy with him or no, then we confess that wo are not for that kind of “fair play”. But if it is to allow him the untrammelled right to scheme, electioneer, and by his jolitical sagacity, secure votes within the ranks of the party, we heartily accord it as simple justice to ihe bril liant and aspiring dhndidate. Grant ing this much to Randall and his friends, wo certainly can claim upon the other hand the legitimate right to criticise his record, show up the bad policy of his election, and with all the vehemence, vigor and ability we can call to our command, advance, as we believe, the superior claims of other and worthier Democrats. This is all the press of the State has done or at tempted to do, and if Mu. Randall and ins prospects suffer by the discussion, it is his misfortune, certainly not the fault of those of us who favor tariff rc- ■form. lu a nutshell, we advocate fighting the campaign of ’84 upon the tariff issue mainly. The first gun of the conflict will be fired at the election of Speaker, and Mr. Randall is not the man to lead the party in such an emergency. The developments of the next ypar wrill attest the wisdom or folly of mir utterances. Wail and sec! Thus have the fatherless been for. A singular coincidence is related ; in connection with three of the gentle- i men who have thus taken the place of the father of these interesting children. Messrs. Russell, Adams and McKee werc classnuiles at Yale College. They are all man led, but neither lias chil dren. Without concert of action, or even knowing what the others were about to do, each applied for and was given the charge he now has.
