Senator Hampton seems to have in curred sonic rather severe criticism be cause lie said recently that while for some reasons be might prefer to retire to private life, yet, if the people de sire his services, he will obey their call This is, indeed, rather a star!ling announcement to come from one who j f,.,,,,, Durban says Getcway.. is gather- . has been honored as Senator Hampton lias been by the people of South < uro- lina. Most men, having tasted the sweets of political life, are not only willing but very, very anxious to con tinue in their enjoyment. In fact, the order of the day in politics is for in cumbents to devote a large share of their time and talent to the making of olans for the extension of their tenure * as long as the dear people will stand it. This, we regret to say, is now one feature of South Carolina politics. That there have been combinations in the party, that wirepullers have been at work, there is no doubt. Happily for the party, and for the people of the State, neither the personnel of our officials nor the character of our public s^vj k e has yet suffered. But there is •rfj'will uc r o* Pl,c ''* I'ttsalts. There is a r •~**i*v-*r #».li.i*r tl.«fc4ka. ...MltUvix XX- -y~ n Trn r rir)l our politics is such that no man can safely aspire to public office without resorting in some degree to the arts of the ward politician. He must needs have something to offer in return for the support lie desires. In such a con dition of tilings it ought to be gratify ing to find a man with sufficient frank ness to declare his actual wishes, and leave it with the people or their rep resentatives to say whether he shall continue to serve them. Vo give Senator Hampton credit for sincerity in Ins utterances, am! wc think his position to bo commended rather than criticised. He is at least consistent, lie has more than once had occasion to say that he has never sought office of the people of the Btate, and in this he appears to have spoken truly. Of his political career before the war wc can not speak. But it is well known that when he was nominated for Governor in 187G, it was entirely without seek ing on his part. His renomination in 1878 was the spontaneous recognition by the people of the magnificent ser vices lie bad so recently rendered to the State. "When, in the same year, the Legislature was about to elect him to the United Sta’cs Senate he wrote to that body as follows: In the first place, I must not be •consid ered in any sense a candidate for the office, w hich should neither he sought nor de clined. And since my name has been mentioned in connection with it, I have rigidly abstained from expressing nigv j wishes or opinions of my own upon the | ^ 1 0I C billed subject, eral scene interests cheerfully I will respond to any call that »hfifilfi upon me; hut if, on the other hand, they deem that the best interests of the State demand that I shall remain in my present position, I will with equal cheerfulness accord with their desire. It will thus bo scon thnt Governor Hampton’s atlitudc now is just what it has been for the past twenty years. It were well for the Democratic party if wo had in it more of such sentiment, and a little less of unbecoming office- seeking.
